"Fireplace is great. However, it took 6 weeks and three subsequent visits to fix the first improper installation. On first three visits, the technicians failed to properly install fireplace, making separate errors each time. Each visit was at least two weeks later. Also, we were never advised the fan was not controlled by the remote, so the only way to change its level is to take the bottom front plate out and manually adjust the fan each time we wish to change it, hoping we do not scratch the surfaces. The manager's reaction to my disappointment about this feature was basically indifference."

"Excellent work - fast turn-around. From start to finish a pleasant experience. Very helpful during the design phase, and the installation crew was outstanding. Came out BETTER (20x30 patio, in pavers) than I anticipated, which is always a great surprise. I HIGHLY recommend."

"Spectrum One is our choice over and over again for renovating our home, which was built in the 1960s. Dennis comes out and looks at the scope of the project and gets back to you in a timely manner with an incredibly detailed and professional proposal. He takes into account your vision for the home and offers suggestions for improving the project or explains how the team can make that vision come to life. The project managers who oversee the project from start to finish have been diligent, respectful and ensure that the work being done is of the highest standards. They are on-site every day with a whole team working to get the job done as beautifully and as quickly as possible. The attention to detail from the whole group is what I most appreciate. We have used them for whole-home flooring (removal, installation and baseboards), recessed lighting, countertops, backsplash and would trust them with any project. We recently completed a third project with Spectrum One that included widening doorways, redoing an outdated fireplace hearth, and remodeling two bathrooms. Everyone at Spectrum One is quick to respond, honest, creative, and fun to be around. We love them and highly recommend to anyone looking to do a renovation, repair, or build!"

"Last fall, Babylon Builders remodeled my kitchen.  Ron was very professional.  He showed up on time and took the time to ask me what my likes and dislikes were.  He took measurements of my kitchen floor and cabinets.  Since then, I hired him to do the construction remodel.  I have new cabinets with a new counter top and new floor tiles.  I’m ecstatic over the change since I bought this home over a year ago and the kitchen needed a lot of work done.  He created more space by reducing the island in the middle of the kitchen.  Very happy!!!"

"Roberto recommended the removal of an overgrown tree and root system that caused a large 3-4 foot crack in the front entrance walkway. The tree removal was included in his bid. Proper drainage lines installed to channel water run off away from the house. Beautiful new colored & stamped concrete was installed. His work ensured the new concrete would be at the same level as the existing backyard deck. His work exceeded my expectations."

"

EGADS! Salvador has now completed three different jobs for us and we wonder - is there anything this hard-working man can't do? In addition, his estimates are upheld and, in my mind, quite reasonable and fair.

Salvador's most recent job entailed trimming seven trees including a liquidambar, Japanese maples, crape myrtles, and a magnolia. I asked him to be conservative with topping and shaping, as I didn't want the trees to be stripped bare, as some tree trimmers do. Viola! He did an awesome job. I also have ten hummingbird feeders and likewise many hummingbirds; therefore, it was important to me that the trees retain a variety of inner tiny branches for them to find shelter. He's so kind that he didn't even think this was silly! Again, every tree looks great and so much neater.

Salvador's crew loaded up all the branches and twigs, and hauled it all away. At the very last, Salvador used the leaf blower to clean up the front and back yards, leaving everything looking oh so well-groomed. He's outstanding, as is his crew. They accommodated my requests and needed no supervision throughout. Again, another exceptional job by this extremely hard-working man and crew. I recommend him highly and will call him in the future without a doubt.

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

Clean regularly, check for cracks, and inspect the chimney annually for safety.

Fireplaces can theoretically help you save on heating bills if you lower the temperature throughout the rest of your home and heat only a single room that you occupy using the fireplace. However, in most cases, homeowners won’t save any money on heating bills. Gas and electric fireplace inserts could actually lead to a spike in your respective energy bills if you use them frequently, and if you don’t keep up with chimney maintenance and repairs, your traditional masonry fireplace could actually be a source of heat loss in the winter.

Backdraft is usually caused by a ventilation or pressure problem. To stop it, you need to replace the air your fireplace draws out through the chimney, so open a window to try and increase the airflow. Sometimes turning on a kitchen or bathroom exhaust fan can help, but they could also be the cause of the backdraft depending on the air pressure inside your home. You may need to install a makeup air system (MUAS) or chimney fan.

The cost to replace a chimney is about $10,000 on average and can cost up to $15,000, depending on the size, accessibility, materials, and extent of the replacement. Sometimes tearing the chimney down to the roof line and rebuilding it is an option. But if the chimney's internal structure deteriorates badly enough, a complete demolition down to the fireplace or the foundation may be necessary.

In general, it will take about 90 minutes to burn the creosote sweeping log by itself, allowing it to work its magic. This may be longer or shorter depending on the conditions of your chimney.
