"Mr. Rooter took the time to explain the problem to us and evaluate options taking care to identify ways to save costs. Based on our experience with them, we've asked them to help us determine how to install a sump in the basement because of flooding and a washer/dryer hookup. We will continue to use them as they are prompt, polite, and professional."

"Well, the first time the replacement was ordered it was the wrong one, which of course, delayed the installation a week. When it was finally installed I had to pay an additional $850 for code upgrades. This I was not informed of by Home Shield. Then we noticed that there was water on the garage floor and found that the pipe coming in from the wall was leaking at the wall so had to call the plumbing company back out to fix it. They first tried to say it was not their fault but since there wasn't a leak before they installed they did fix it. I have used Home Shield a few times before and never had a problem. Some of the companies they use are not the best so you have to research them before you commit. I have found HS service to be good if you do your homework. At the end of the day I was without hot water for almost 3 weeks but it was do to the plumbing company they sent out."

The Water Guide helps homeowners protect their family by understanding and improving the water they use every single day.\n\nMost people think about drinking water, but your home’s water affects far more than what comes out of the kitchen faucet. You drink it, cook with it, shower in it, bathe your kids in it, wash your clothes with it, and use it throughout your entire home. Over time, hard water, chlorine, unpleasant taste or odor, mineral buildup, sediment, and possible contaminants can impact your comfort, your plumbing, your appliances, your skin, your hair, and your overall peace of mind.\n\nThe Water Guide provides complimentary water testing and honest education for homeowners who are concerned about what may be in their tap water. We help identify common water issues such as chlorine smell, bad taste, hard water spots, dry skin, itchy scalp, eczema concerns, cloudy water, scale buildup, appliance wear, and the desire for cleaner, better-quality water throughout the entire home.

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

The main difference between a water softener and a water filter is what they remove from the water. A water softener is specifically designed to remove hard minerals, while a filter removes a wider range of contaminants above a certain size, such as bacteria and other impurities. If your primary goal is to remove minerals, a softener is the best choice. If you want to remove various contaminants for safety or taste, a filter is more suitable. Filters are also typically less expensive to install. Depending on your water supply's specific issues, you may need to install both systems for comprehensive treatment.

Choosing involves understanding water hardness levels, household size, desired features, and consulting professionals experienced in suitable system types.

Whether you need a permit or license for a water softener installation depends on your location, as requirements vary significantly. Some municipalities require the installer to hold a plumbing license, some mandate a permit and an inspection, and others require both. In some areas, no special permit or license is needed at all.

To determine the rules in your area, you can contact your local building department or consult a local water softener installer or plumber. Often, only certified professionals are authorized to pull the necessary permits, and they will typically handle the entire permitting process for you. Regardless of local laws, it is always recommended to hire a licensed professional to ensure the system is sized and installed correctly. You can use Angi’s state licensing tool to check an installer’s license status.

A tankless water heater should be at least 10 feet away from a water softener, although the pros you hire for water softener installation can help you determine the correct distance. These two units need to have some distance between them to prevent hot water from the tankless water heater from flowing backward into the water softener when it runs a regeneration cycle.

Hard water stains can be a headache because they will reoccur as long as hard water flows through. Thankfully, hard water stains are not permanent. With the right tools and an appropriate cleaning routine, you can prevent hard water stains from ever building up. However, you might feel like you are stuck in a constant cleaning cycle. In that case, you may consider hiring a contractor to perform routine cleaning.
