"Consumer reports that she called in to just get a quote yesterday. The mechanic came in today, he gave me the quote, he said it would just cost about $400.00 for the whole thing, but once he got here, he broke down the pricing this way: I have a refrigerator mechanic is here, he's telling me that it will cost $120.00 for the service call, $174.00 for the labor, $100.00 for the part, but that doesn't include tax, I told him that it was ok to take a look and start it, he took the part with him to compare prices, and he also said that they charge $87.00/hour for the work, that is the $174.00 for labor. I am not comfortable with the pricing because I don't want to be overcharged in the long run. I did explain to him yesterday what I needed, but I didn't tell him everything that I needed that needs to be done with the refrigerator, but he figured it out. I just want to make sure that the hourly charge is correct, as well as me having to pay for the parts needed, but he did offer other options if my budget was tight. He is willing to work with me budget wise. He is extremely polite and helpful, I just want some reassurance that the charges he quoted are something normal that other consumers are charged for the same type of work. He found other issues that we were unaware of, and gave us helpful tips to keep our fridge running properly. Consumer agreed to have me submit a review about this contractor for her"

"Juan did an excellent job he came on time he cleaned up everything after he was done. He disposed of the boxes, and tidied up the space where he put the closet doors together. He was just awesome and professional definitely I am going to hire him to do more work. The doors didn’t actually fit properly….and he retrofitted them to make them fit and look nice. He was great!!"

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

Yes, HVAC zoning is generally considered worth the investment by both experts and homeowners. Zoned systems offer significant benefits in convenience, efficiency, and comfort by allowing you to set different temperatures for various rooms or 'zones' in your house. This ability to heat and cool only the spaces you're using leads to energy savings and lower utility bills. Zoned systems are especially effective in multi-level homes that experience temperature fluctuations, but even smaller homes can benefit from the ability to adjust temperatures more quickly. While the up-front installation cost can be high, many find it's a worthwhile long-term investment, particularly for those who plan to stay in their home for a while.

An HVAC system typically lasts between 10 and 30 years, with an average lifespan of 15 to 25 years. The longevity of the system is influenced by factors such as the quality of the unit, usage frequency, local climate, and how well it is maintained. Regular maintenance, including cleaning, filter replacements, and professional inspections, can help maximize its lifespan. Different components within the system have varying life expectancies. For example:

  • Furnaces: 15 to 30 years

  • Boilers: 20 to 35 years

  • Air Conditioners (AC units): 12 to 20 years

  • Heat Pumps: 10 to 20 years

  • Ductless Mini-Splits: 10 to 30 years

Aside from needing HVAC repair, there are times when you may need to replace your unit. HVAC replacement costs $5,000 to $12,500. Here are some telltale signs that your HVAC unit is going bad:

  • Your unit is 10 years or older.

  • Your home is very humid.

  • The unit keeps cycling without producing cool air.

  • You need to repair the unit frequently.

Air filters with a high MERV rating, 11 or above, shouldn't cause airflow problems in most residential systems. However, the airflow can be restricted in some HVAC systems if they aren't designed for high MERV ratings. If in doubt, a local duct installer should inspect your ductwork so that you know what your system can handle.

You can air condition your Arizona room by extending your home’s existing HVAC system or adding a ductless mini-split system. Arizona rooms that have full windows rather than screens only are a better choice for air conditioning—screens will let the cold air out as fast as the air conditioner can make it.
