"We met with the designer, De Anza and she was very helpful and was able to provide a number of savings for us. We had three estimates and Closet World was the least expensive and provided the best options. I really wanted a built in look versus a hanging closet and Closet World offered this for less money than the others. Between the estimate and our agreement I read various reviews on Closet World from other websites and they were horrible so when De Anza returned to finalize a few changes to the original agreement we were very frank with our concerns. She assured us the San Diego team was excellent so we decided to give them a chance. I was nervous about what I had read but I also felt De Anza had been very diligent in her work with us and therefore we decided to trust her. We did correspond via email a couple of times since the installation date was scheduled for a month after the order date and that did not work for us. De Anza put us directly in contact with the installer, Mike, and he was wonderful and very accommodating. We were able to get the closets installed a week prior to the original date and that was perfect for us. Miguel and Willie were the two installers who came, at the time we were told they would arrive. They were both very professional and did a wonderful job. Both closets were installed in less than 4 hours and they also did a great job cleaning up after they finished. I couldn't be happier with the closets and we will consider using them for other projects. Items to note for the best results: 1. Have a good idea of what you want prior to the designer coming so you can have input into the design to ensure you are getting what you want. De Anza made some changes to her original plan because I felt there was a better use of space than her original drawing and after thinking about it, she agreed. 2. Follow up to ensure everything is in order during the time of the contract agreement and Installation. Closet World knew we would write a review of their services and I assured them I would write a good review if I was happy and a poor review if they did not live up to their promises. Fortunately for us both, we are VERY happy with our closets. 3. Read the contract since you may assume you are getting something that you are not getting. For example, the pictures in their catalogs show backing to all of the closets but none are included unless you pay for it. That may not be discussed, although it is clear in the contract. Don't make assumptions- ask before you sign. (We were aware of this but again, it was not directly stated when we were getting an estimate. 4. Have your closets ready for installation and everything removed, including baseboards. Although I am sure Willie and Miguel could do that, we discovered our builder had nailed the previous closet boards into the sprinkler system and it created a flood. Fortunately everything was repaired prior to the installers coming so they could do their work without fear of running into a problem. 5. Finally, when you have prepared your closets for installation (we painted them prior to installation-definitely helpful) you can state to the installers that you have done everything to make their job easier so you know they will do everything to ensure your closets are beautiful when they are finished! And that is what happened!

Closets questions, answered by experts

You can turn an adjacent room into a walking closet by just rearranging the room. This means removing the furniture and adding racks and an island in the center if you have that in your budget. Houses with two bedrooms connected to each other are great options for large walk-in closets that don't require any structural changes or much building whatsoever.

If you have a bathroom closet with movable shelves, you can place them at virtually any spacing that works for you. Useful measurements between shelves in the working, or middle, section can be 10 to 16 inches for towels or linens. Lower or higher shelving could be up to 24 inches between shelves to store lesser-used or bulky items or boxes.

The time it takes to build a closet varies widely depending on the project's size, complexity, and level of customization. On average, construction can take anywhere from a few days to two weeks.

A simple reach-in closet might be completed in less than a day, while a more complex walk-in closet could take one to two days or more. A typical project often falls in the 2-to-5-day range. However, a large, highly customized walk-in closet that requires structural changes, like moving a load-bearing wall, will take significantly longer.

A professional contractor can provide the most accurate time estimate for your specific project. If you are planning a DIY build, it is best to budget additional time.

On average, building a custom or built-in closet costs around $2,100. However, the total price can range from as little as $500 for a simple DIY project to $6,000 or more for a large, high-end custom closet. Most projects typically fall between $1,500 and $5,000.

The final cost depends on several factors, including the closet's size, type, materials, and features. Here is a general cost breakdown by closet type:

  • Reach-in closet: $500 to $1,500

  • Walk-in closet: $750 to $5,000

  • Wardrobe: $2,000 to $6,000 or more

Choosing a prefabricated closet system is generally less expensive than a fully custom build. The scope of design and construction services will also significantly impact the price.

Tiny house living requires creative solutions to the one biggest issue: space. Many people in tiny houses find life most manageable if they practice minimalism. Eliminating excess items and clutter makes the living space feel bigger, which can be a significant mood booster. It can also be challenging to get utilities arranged for a tiny house, and building and zoning codes can and often do present unique challenges to overcome.
