"Frankie was quick to respond and had someone out pretty quickly the next day. The job was to install a smart dimmer switch and Nest thermostat. The contractor was there for 90 minutes, 30 minutes of which was me setting up the thermostat all of which I was billed for so I didn't put the thermostat through a test until after he left so I wouldn't get charged more. On top of the 90 minutes, they were going to charge me for a trip charge which I was unaware of but upon speaking with Frankie he waived it since I hadn't been informed of the charge ahead of time. After the tech left I tested the thermostat which didn't work so then spent the next 4 hours with nest customer support to find out it had been wired wrong. I gave Genelco 2.5 stars because they were prompt and responsive and got half the job right. but when I called the tech back to ask for a receipt and also mentioned the thermostat wasn't working he didn't really have a response or offer any solution."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

With proper maintenance, a whole-house generator can last between 20 and 40 years. The specific lifespan depends on how often and for how long the generator is used, and some models may have their life expectancy rated in hours of operation. To maximize its lifespan, expect to spend around $150 to $300 per year for annual maintenance checks from a qualified technician. During these checks, a technician will inspect the engine filter, starting mechanism, fuel, lubrication, and coolant levels. Consulting your installer and choosing a low-impact fuel like natural gas or diesel can also help ensure your generator lasts as long as possible.

Homeowners can often access federal tax credits, such as the Investment Tax Credit (ITC), which covers a percentage of installation costs. Many states and utilities offer additional rebates, grants, or performance-based incentives. These programs can significantly lower your upfront investment. Check the Database of State Incentives for Renewables and Efficiency (DSIRE) or contact your local energy office for current offers.

In most cases, there are no tax credits available for home generators. However, that’s a general statement that applies to federal tax credits, so you might have access to state or local tax incentives. You can check the Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency (DSIRE) for more information about your area. If you hire a reliable home generator installer, they should also know if there are any state or local perks you can use to reduce your installation costs, including tax breaks and rebates.

If you’re deciding between a solar battery versus a generator for the best backup power solution, you can take a few factors into consideration. Solar batteries are quiet while generators can be quite loud. Generators have a lower up-front cost, but they require fuel and ongoing maintenance while solar batteries are more expensive but don’t have many ongoing costs.

Whole-house generators need to be installed on level ground several feet away from walls and other objects. Because they tap into the electrical system directly, they usually need to be close to your home electrical panel for a transfer switch installation. It also helps with installation if they are near to a gas line or propane tank installation.
