"I requested asbestos-containing mastic be removed from my concrete slab floor without chemicals. I was told on the phone it could be done and concrete would look new. However, a couple of days before, I received an email indicating it would be scraped down so it would just not be 3 dimensional. I called to discuss this with the person I first communicated with and was assured it would be completely removed, though my concrete floor would not be the same color as if chemicals were used. The final result is the mastic is scraped so it is level to the floor, but the color of the floor is dark where there was more mastic. To All Clears credit, I think they did about as well as could be done by scraping. It would probably require some additional methods to clean slightly below the surface. I appreciated that the workers that removed the mastic were steady, hard workers. I would have preferred to see the workers use protective equipment for their own use."

"This company was priced very reasonably, and they were very flexible with their scheduling. I hired them to demolish and remove a 30 ft tall golf net structure from the back of my home. It was a delicate project given the location and the terrain. ALM did a great job!"

Asbestos Removal questions, answered by experts

Some pros may recommend covering a popcorn ceiling that tests positive for asbestos with beadboard ceiling planks or drywall. The cost to install a beadboard ceiling averages more than $5,000, but you likely will pay more than the average for the installer to deal with the asbestos safely. Installing a beadboard ceiling or new drywall will disturb the asbestos and release some microscopic fibers, so the installer will need to take precautions.

Regulations require certified professionals for removals and disposal in compliance with local and federal guidelines, ensuring safety and legality.

Epoxying over asbestos tiles is generally considered a safe option when done correctly. Epoxy acts as a sealant, encapsulating the asbestos tiles and preventing the release of asbestos fibers into the air. The key is ensuring that the asbestos tiles are in good condition, firmly adhered to the substrate, and not damaged or deteriorating. This method is only appropriate for tiles that are undamaged and securely in place. If the asbestos tiles are already loose, damaged, or deteriorating, encapsulating them with epoxy may not be a sufficient solution, as it might not address the potential for ongoing asbestos exposure.

Asbestos-containing materials, like duct wrap, should be encapsulated using a sealant specifically formulated for asbestos. These sealants work to bind with asbestos fibers and help further neutralize them as a health risk. Whenever you’re working near asbestos-containing materials, be sure to keep safety as a top priority and wear a P-100-rated respirator as well as protective clothing.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), hazardous waste is generally classified into four main categories:

1. Characteristic Wastes: These exhibit at least one of four hazardous traits: ignitability (flammable, like gasoline), corrosivity (can rust or decompose materials, like car batteries), reactivity (unstable and can explode, like aerosol cans), or toxicity (harmful when ingested, like lead-based paint).

2. Listed Wastes: These are specific wastes from manufacturing and industrial processes that the EPA has officially designated as hazardous. They include byproducts from processes that use solvents, pesticides, and other chemicals.

3. Universal Wastes: These are commonly generated hazardous items that are subject to streamlined regulations. Examples include batteries, pesticides, mercury-containing equipment (e.g., bulbs), and some lamps.

4. Mixed Wastes: This category includes waste that contains both hazardous and radioactive components, making it subject to regulation by both the EPA and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
