But also keep an eye (and nose) out for more dangerous signs, such as a sparking microwave, a smoking oven, or a leaking fridge. Appliances that spark, smoke, smell foul or burnt, or are leaking may mean that there are broken parts, and this brings higher risk of fire, shock, and water damage.

Choosing a unit with higher BTUs can use more electricity if the BTUs are more than what’s necessary for your room size. However, choosing an AC with BTUs that match the size of your room or house, your unit will cool your space efficiently. On the flip side, choosing a system with not enough BTUs can cause the system to work harder to try to cool the space, leading to more electricity consumption and higher energy bills.

When thinking about repairing or replacing an oven, considering the “50% rule” will help you the most. This rule states that if your oven is over 50% of the way through its lifespan, or the cost of the repair is more than 50% of the price of a new oven, then replacing it will be more cost-effective in the long run. 

However, if you have a newer oven that only requires a simple fix, there’s no need to scrap it altogether. Taking care of the more minor repairs will help you get the most out of your oven for longer. 

If your unit is more than 10 years old and facing constant repairs, replace it with a new air conditioner. If the unit is under 10 years old but repairs total more than $5,000, consult your warranty. If repairs still cost more than $5,000 after warranty coverage, go ahead and replace the unit. Keep the lifespan of an AC unit and the cost of maintenance in mind when deciding whether to repair or replace an air conditioner.
