You can install many types of interior doors without a frame as long as the door is prehung or there is already an existing door in the opening. If the opening has never had a door installed, you will need to install a frame with the door. A prehung door is a door that already has hinges attached. If you had a prehung door previously installed, you would simple swap the new door for the old one, and the most work you need to door is align the door and drill in a few screws. 

Plenty of building codes dictate what you must install in your home, but door sweeps are optional. However, they're a low-cost addition with many advantages. So, installing a sweep on all your exterior doors is in your best interest. You'll save money in the long run and stay more comfortable year-round.

You have several options when choosing the best lumber for your door jamb. Pine is the most common material due to its resistance to swelling. Fir is strong and durable. You could also go with birch or alder. Any wood with a tight grain will work for this project.

You can convert a pre-hung door into a Dutch door, but it’s more of a pain. Pre-hung doors are already set in the frame with the hinges and everything aligned, so once you cut the slab in half, you’ll likely need to adjust the hinge placement and maybe even mess with the frame itself. It’s doable, but expect some trial and error because it’s not a straight-swap situation.
