For regular use, you'll want a door that is easy to operate and durable. If you only wish to use the garage for storage, go for a less expensive style or one that maximizes curb appeal over functionality.

It’s possible to use a torch to melt ice on your garage door, but we don’t recommend it. It’s very easy to bring the flame too close to the door, which can melt the weather stripping or even the garage door itself. You’ll melt ice quickly with a torch, but the damage you’re likely to cause can end up costing you a few hundred dollars to fix, which isn’t worth it. Instead, we recommend pouring hot water over the frozen area or using a less intense heat source, like a hair dryer or space heater.

Indoor propane heaters are safe to use in a garage. You may be able to use an outdoor propane heater inside a garage in some instances, as long as the garage door remains open and there’s constant airflow to allow the carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide to escape. Other garage heaters include electric heaters and gas heaters.

It is possible for a car to interfere with a garage door opener, but the interference will most likely be caused by any onboard electronics in this scenario. If you encounter this problem, try parking a safe distance away from the garage door and turn off the car’s electronic equipment.
