"I would serve as a reference for Affordable Handyman any day! We originally hired them to replace the sheet rock in the ceiling of our garage. The work was excellent, and they were extremely qualified, flexible and accommodating. Their impressive skill set and affordability led them to several more jobs. They were able to completely remodel two guest bathrooms including plumbing, electrical, paint and tile work (which included the tedious installation of both glass and porcelain tile). The best example of their commitment to the job was the Friday before Easter. We had a house full of company and the heating element in our hot water heater burned out. Jason replaced the element and waited for the heater to refill and get hot before leaving for the weekend. This was going above and beyond the call of duty, and we truly appreciated the extra effort to help us out in a tough spot. We will definitely use them in the future."

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

The installation cost for a brick or stone gas fireplace typically ranges from $3,500 to $12,000. Key factors that influence the total expense include the type of material chosen, labor costs, the setup for the gas line, venting requirements, and any custom design elements.

Not all gas fireplaces need a chimney. If you install a ventless gas fireplace, it will release low levels of combustion byproducts back into your living space (instead of pushing them outside through a chimney or vent). Ventless fireplaces burn fuel efficiently, so the emissions are minimal—but they could bother people with allergies or respiratory issues.

The disadvantages of a wood-burning stove include a slow heating time and the effort required for fuel. It can take about an hour for a cold stove to produce noticeable heat. Additionally, homeowners must source their own fuel by buying or chopping firewood, cutting it to the appropriate size, and storing it in a dry place. The fire also requires regular attention, as you'll need to add more logs throughout the day.

The height of the chimney for your outdoor fireplace depends on where the fireplace is located. Ideally, the chimney should be 2 to 3 feet higher than surrounding structures; this allows smoke to ventilate properly without endangering anyone or anything.

Note: Your municipality may have strict requirements regarding chimney heights, so it’s always a good idea to check local building codes.

You can, but you shouldn’t. While you can still start a fire in your fireplace, the smoke and other fumes won’t have a proper way to escape if the flue is cracked. By continuing to operate your fireplace, wood stove, or furnace, you are putting your home at risk of absorbing toxic byproducts of the fire source.
