It is not advisable to pour concrete directly on dirt. Even compacted soil—known as a subgrade—is not strong enough to maintain the form of concrete. You can, however, pour concrete over concrete as long as the overlay has proper bonding agents and the slab below is clear of damage.

Most concrete patios can benefit from resealing every 2 to 5 years, though the exact timing depends on the type of sealer used, how much wear and tear the surface gets, and how exposed it is to the elements. Concrete can crack from general wear, improper installation, or in response to uneven support from the soil underneath. Small, thin cracks on the surface of aging concrete are often a result of normal wear and tear, while cracks on new concrete likely indicate a problem with installation. Larger cracks or uneven steps can signify a much more severe issue. A concrete contractor should be able to diagnose the cause and repair concrete cracks for you.

Generally speaking, stain is a better option for concrete because it soaks into the surface and won’t get worn away like a topical paint will. Painting concrete increases the risk that moisture will get trapped beneath the top layer of paint, which wears concrete down over time. So long as you know how to prep concrete for staining, you'll maintain its strength after you finish your project.

You should water new concrete by spraying it five to 10 times per day for the first seven days. This process of moist curing allows the concrete to become as strong as possible to prevent cracks and weak concrete. Moist-cured concrete is 50% stronger than concrete that was not sprayed with water during the first week. The only exception is if you pour concrete in the winter. Then, spraying with water is not recommended.
