You know if you have a skunk hole if you can smell the skunk’s musk. Skunks have a strong odor even when they aren’t spraying due to threats, and you may smell it coming from under a building or another hiding spot, such as a shrub or wood pile. They may also dig shallow holes around a lawn in search of food.

Certified fire door inspectors should inspect fire doors. These professionals receive training to specifically assess the condition, functionality, and compliance of fire doors. They often hold credentials from groups like the Door and Hardware Institute (DHI) or the International Fire Door Inspector Association (IFDIA). While fire marshals won’t usually do hands-on inspections, they’ll check that doors are being maintained properly during routine safety audits. If a building relies on fire doors for code compliance, it needs someone who understands the details—the difference between a cosmetic issue and a safety failure—and standards to sign off with confidence.

Crawl spaces are prone to issues caused by excess humidity and improper ventilation, but that doesn’t mean you should avoid buying a house with a crawl space. A home that is encapsulated and well-maintained shouldn’t have any more issues than a slab or basement home.

A home inspector is only required to give a copy of their report to the party who hired them. This means that only a seller would receive a copy of a pre-listing inspection report, while only the buyer receives a report for pre-purchase home inspections. You can choose to share this report with the other party, but this isn’t a common practice. As a seller, you would typically only get a sense of the most significant inspection discoveries when you receive a request for repair from the buyer.

Unfortunately, asbestos is not easily identified and can often be hidden in plain sight in your home. While it can look like fluffy fibers, tiny pieces can also appear in materials like plastic or cement, making it impossible to identify on your own properly.

Plus, since asbestos is so dangerous when disturbed, you should never root around to try and find it. This job is best for a professional who can test for the material properly.
