"We bought a new construction and McCrea installed the HVAC. Home inspection identified the heat pump was not working in Oct. 2020. McCrea identified it was due to leaking refrigerants and promise fixed the issue. Our electric bill was extremely high the following two months and the heat pump was not cooling in Spring 2021. McCrea sent technician and again repaired the system. Bought their maintenance plan. We had 4+ repairs plus regular tune up in the past two years. Last week the heat pump stopped cooling again. We are out of labor warranty and charge us with $89 diagnostic cost after membership discount. It took three days for them to send someone to check while we suffering 90F in our house. They identified the compressor dead and need replacement. They charge $1900 for labor after membership discount. Most likely cause of the compressor failure is "suicide" with assistance. Low refrigerant at beginning and over change in later repairs likely contributed the short life."

I’m Miles, and I have been in the electrical industry for 4 years. I have completed high school trade schooling and 4 year technical schooling. My best skillset is in residential wiring, including new construction wiring, remodels, troubleshooting, electrical panels, fixture installation, and much more. I’m also skilled in commercial work, such as bending and installing conduit, running MC cable, and working on three phase power systems. I work independently at a company but I enjoy doing work for people on my days off or in my free time. I have multiple clients that I’ve been working with for years, they’ve become more of friends than just people I work for. I enjoy my work and the people it allows me to get to know and help.

"Perfect. What a wonderful gentleman."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

Many HVAC companies offer free quotes and free estimates for repairs and new HVAC systems. Others offer low-cost quotes or apply the cost of the estimates or diagnostics to your final bill if you hire them. Be aware that some companies advertise free HVAC quotes and recoup the costs by charging more for their services. Free HVAC quotes are never truly free—they cost the company time and effort—so be a good customer. Also understand that you may end up paying for free quotes in another way if you don’t hire a reputable company.

HVAC systems last around 10 to 30 years. If you complete the recommended maintenance, you can expect your system to reach its maximum life span. The life span also depends on the type of HVAC system. Heat pumps last about 10 to 15 years, AC units last about 15 to 20 years, and furnaces last around 15 to 30 years. Boilers have the longest life span, as they last around 20 to 30 years.

No, heat pump maintenance needs are very similar to air conditioners, including keeping outdoor units clean, changing filters regularly, and occasionally scheduling a refrigerant check to see if any has leaked out. Heat pumps typically switch automatically between heating and cooling, so you don’t need to worry about manually changing them every season. However, since they are always on call, they can develop wear and tear faster than an air conditioner.

You should service your AC at least once per year, in the spring, and twice per year if your unit is 10 years or older. As your unit ages, more maintenance can catch problems early and help the system reach its full lifespan potential, usually 15 years.

Get on your HVAC technician’s schedule in early spring so your unit is ready to go for the season. If you’re doing two inspections per year, aim for one in the spring and one in the fall. You should also service your furnace once per year in the fall.

A new HVAC system can add 5% to 7% to your home’s value, especially if you upgrade the entire system, including ductwork and insulation. In total, these upgrades could bring around a 30% return on investment (ROI). Add a smart home thermostat, and your home’s value could increase because the heating and cooling systems are more modern, efficient, and convenient.
