Small jobs welcome

"We had a sunroom built on the back of our house. We hired Brooks to remove siding and install drywall so we could paint and create an accent wall where exterior siding used to be. Brooks responded quickly and completed the job in one day! He returned to sand a couple days later and it looks great. He was professional, friendly, respectful of our property and other hired workers that were onsite putting the finishing touches on our sunroom. We felt the price was reasonable for what we had done and we definitely recommend his services."

"This job was completed efficiently and professionally. A design specialist came to test and measure every detail for the project. The crew arrived with everything needed for the job. They worked very hard to install Waterguard in the concrete floors inside around the foundation to the sump pump basket. They also installed Geo-lock anchors to support a block wall that was bowed. This company has 36 years in business and provides excellent results and professional customer relations. Call Amer. Wtrwrks for a free estimate. You will not be disappointed. A wise investment of $11,270."

"David Kottke did an excellent job of tightening the support beams that we have in our basement. He also was very thorough about cleaning up and checking the drain by out egress window. Also checked our sump pump and looked at the other walls in our basement to see if they needed any work done. Thanks for the great job."

"Tony could not be any better at what he does. Awesome guy to work with. He’s timely professional and does high quality work. Fixed a whole in the wall, color matched the paint so you could hardly notice the repair. Great work even with working on a treacherous staircase. Thank you Tony. Could not recommend American drywall and painting enough."

Wall Repair FAQs, answered by experts

Sand and gravel are two suitable options for filling behind a retaining wall. If you’re building your own retaining wall, you’ll complete this part of the process—known as backfilling—after you finish laying the blocks. Make sure not to skip it—otherwise, you could wind up with drainage issues, which can cause your retaining wall to collapse.

Most railroad tie retaining walls have a life span of 20 to 30 years, though you may need to replace your wall sooner if it’s repeatedly exposed to heavy rain, runoff, and excess moisture. Railroad ties are typically treated with creosote, which makes them much more durable than untreated wood. Though they last longer, they don’t last forever. For the most longevity, make sure your retaining wall has a sturdy base and steel reinforcements. You should also install drainage to direct water away from the wall.

Generally speaking, a retaining wall should be between 3 and 4 feet high, depending on variables such as the wall-building material, the purpose of the retaining wall, and more. If you want your retaining wall to be taller than 4 feet, check with your local building ordinance office for the maximum allotment. You may also need a special permit for retaining walls over 4 feet tall.

Railroad ties can be good for retaining walls, but it depends on the area. They have a desirable rustic look and are durable. The problem is they’re treated with creosote, a preservative the EPA says poses a risk to humans and wildlife. Over time, the preservative seeps out of the wood and into the ground. Many areas have banned the use of creosote-treated wood on residential properties. If your area does allow it, never use railroad ties near an edible garden or drinking water source. Instead, use wood that’s treated with an EPA-approved preservative or a wood-alternative composite material.

Most retaining wall installations can be finished in one to three weeks, but the timeline varies based on factors like wall size and material. The local climate and major weather events, such as storms or flooding, can also extend the project's timeline, as can any holds ups in the permitting process.
