I called him several times and finally caught up with him about a month ago, when he said he had had some family issues and would get back to me soon. But he never did. I spent time cleaning my house, speaking with him, writing him an email with all the details of my project, calling references, and waiting months for an answer. The very least he could have done was said he wasn't interested in the project."

There are a few options if you miss a stud. You can simply patch the hole with spackle, sand it down, repaint it, and then find the stud—essentially starting over. If you don’t want to do that, you can insert one of the more robust drywall anchor options and hang your item on that, but that will only work if the drywall is in excellent condition and the anchor is rated for the weight of the item you’re hanging on it. You may be able to cover the hole with the object itself once it’s mounted, but it’s still recommended to at least fill the hole to protect insulation and prevent vermin from entering.  

If nail pops in your drywall aren't fixed, there can be consequences to the structure of your home and the aesthetics of the room. Nail pops may loosen or weaken drywall and may be less effective at providing support and insulation, ultimately requiring more extensive repairs or replacement in the future.
