"I called Eric Peters based on an Angie's List review.  I was living with a screened porch which was cedar board finished and had been stained a horrible orange color, due to my own mistake.  I wanted it undone.  As with the other estimators I talked to, Eric pointed out that it would be nigh impossible to remove the previous stain, and difficult to cover it.  We agreed we'd like to preserve the nice grain of the wood, while "getting the orange out".  Eric worked with me very patiently during the next month or so, to find a product which would result in a porch surface I could live with.  Once the decision was made, Eric's employee arrived promptly and applied 2 coats to the walls and ceiling areas, pretty effectively removing the orange glow of the previous stain.  Furniture and screens were carefully moved, and the brush stain job was very neat.

Small jobs welcome

"We had our deck replaced, and stained. We left the cedar floor unstained for a year, and asked Joel to stain it the following year. The stain peeled within 10 months. We decided to get a different contractor to fix this issue...as we lost confidence that Lugatich Properties would fix it to our satisfaction."

"Kenzie and his crew did an excellent job. We had a board to replace on our deck, and then they cleaned and stained our deck. They were also fantastic about clean-up everyday. We are definitely going to be hiring them for more work on our house."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Deciding whether to stain or paint a pool deck depends on your budget, desired look, and the deck's material. Both options can work. Paint offers a wider variety of color options, provides excellent water resistance, and can last longer. However, it requires a primer and can eventually fade or peel. Stain is often cheaper, easier to apply, and penetrates the wood for a more natural look and longer-lasting finish. It also has great water resistance. The downsides are fewer color options and the need for a sealant. The choice can also depend on the deck material; for example, staining may be a better option for concrete as it bonds well and lasts longer than paint.

Ultimately, overapplication of stain can compromise the deck's appearance, durability, and longevity. It may result in an uneven finish, with excess stain pooling, dripping, or drying into thick patches. It can also obscure the wood's natural grain and texture, detracting from the desired aesthetic. Moreover, excessive staining may not fully penetrate the wood, leading to poor adhesion and premature wear. Additionally, thick layers of stain are prone to peeling, cracking, and blistering as they struggle to bond with the surface.

Your tool of choice ultimately comes down to personal preference. Many DIYers prefer applying stain with a lint-free rag, but others stick with a paint brush or a roller. Wipe the stain and work it into the wood, working with and against the grain. If you’re applying multiple coats, allow the stain to dry for around four hours between coats.

Always sand a deck before repainting so the wood is smooth and ready for paint. While you do not need to fully remove paint before repainting, sanding helps remove any areas with weather and sun damage. Sanding also helps remove chipped or flaking paint and opens the wood pores to improve paint adhesion.

Avoid using cleaning products that are abrasive or contain bleach or acidic components on composite decking to avoid discoloration. Early-generation Trex decking isn’t designed to handle pressure washer cleaning—and if you use them on second-generation boards, always use a low setting to avoid the risk of damage that can risk voiding your warranty.
