"This is such a great company!!! I am the worst at picking out paint colors and put off getting our great room painted for nearly a year. Alisa was so sweet and patient. She even came over and helped to guide me to the perfect color for our space. I am so grateful!!! The entire team was wonderful! I am very particular about things and I didn’t have a single complaint about the quality of the job. Plus, the company supports many local programs for our community. We will definitely call 5 Star Painting for future projects! (And you should too)"

"If you’re looking for painting you don’t hesitate when it come to Micheals painting. Response is quick and they do top knot hair efficient work. I had them paint all my trim doors and kitchen cabinets all white from a honey oak. I also had a tallhallway and ceiling done. I’m very particular and was anxious about having the cabinets done. Im an avid researcher of products and reader of reviews. These guys were recommended by a friend. I’m so happy with the job. It looks fantastic. No need to look for anyone else for any paint job you have. Just do it and put your research goggle away!"

"Rolando and his team were excellent to work with. Very responsive, professional, and efficient. The work looked great when complete and was reasonably priced for the job. There were a couple areas missed that I didn't catch until after they had left (they were painting a rental unit for me, not my primary residence); I think those were simply a miscommunication, I had no concern that those were intentionally skipped, and they were easy for me to touch up on my own. I would definitely hire them again for future painting projects!"

"A little higher priced, but best quality. Be sure to not mess up the schedule, if there is another contractor on site, the painters will leave the job if the other contractor is in their space, and you may not know it til late in the day."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

It is not always necessary to remove old stain before restaining a deck. If the previous stain is in good condition and is compatible with the new stain, you may be able to apply a new coat after thorough cleaning. However, if the old stain is in bad condition, flaking, or peeling, it is best to remove it completely to ensure an even surface and proper adhesion for the new coat. Staining over a damaged layer can lead to an uneven finish and poor penetration. For best results, test a small area first and consult the stain manufacturer's guidelines.

Limewash and whitewash are two techniques used to give brick a light, matte finish, but they differ in composition, application, and permanence. The best choice depends on your aesthetic goals and the specific surface.

Composition

  • Limewash: A natural and environmentally friendly option made from limestone, water, and sometimes pigments. It is breathable and soaks into porous surfaces like brick.

  • Whitewash: Traditionally made from lime, water, chalk, and binders, but a similar look can be achieved with watered-down white paint. It is paint-based and sits on top of the surface.

Appearance and Finish

  • Limewash: Provides a natural, textured appearance that allows the brick's character to show through. It offers a more traditional finish.

  • Whitewash: Creates a softer, more opaque finish, often used for a rustic or shabby-chic style.

Application and Permanence

  • Limewash: Is semi-permanent and can be removed, making it a good choice if you might want to change the look in the future. It requires more skill to apply and cannot be used on previously painted brick.

  • Whitewash: Is a more permanent solution. It is more forgiving to apply and can be used on painted brick. However, because it sits on the surface, it can trap moisture.

Ultimately, if you want a breathable, natural, and reversible finish for unpainted brick, limewash is a great option. If you need a more permanent, opaque coating that can be applied over painted surfaces, whitewash is the better choice. Whitewashing may also be more economical, costing approximately $1.40 to $4.20 per square foot.

Exterior paints contain more volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, making them dangerous when used indoors. Without the free ventilation of the great outdoors, it can take longer for the fumes to dissipate than interior paint. While you may notice the smell lessening more quickly, you should be wary of paint fumes inside for 48 to 72 hours after it dries.

Oxygen bleach uses hydrogen peroxide as a base and won’t harm wood when using it as a cleaner. On the other hand, chlorine bleach breaks down wood at the cellular level and causes irreversible harm. Although you may not see immediate damage to wood after exposing it to chlorine bleach, its strength and integrity are now compromised.

It's okay to walk on a newly painted deck after about four to six hours as long as the weather has been dry. Be sure to wait at least 24 hours before you place any outdoor furniture or grills on a freshly painted deck, though.
