"I cannot say enough good things about Rich and his crew at Custom Craft Environmental. After having our sump get overwhelmed by 7+ inches of rain, we were lost. Made several calls to "national" water clean up companies with no reason. Rich was at our house 2 hrs after we called and his crew was there the next morning. They were efficient, helpful, knowledgeable, kind, punctual. Price was good and work was excellent. We highly, highly recommend."

I initially had a poor interaction with Mike that did not result in solving the above plumbing problem above. However, he has since connected with me and resolved the issue fairly.  He did an excellent job the first time I hired him (successfully unclogging a tub drain). Even though the second time we hired him was not successful (and we had to hire a second plumber to resolve the problem) we will use him in the future because he reached out to resolve our concerns in a professional manner.

"I had sewer gas coming in the home at times and suspected a cracked vent stack. I called these guys to run a camera to look for it. They noticed right away the non-standard, large size of my vent stack, which could be causing wind to blow back sewer gas. They had a low cost solution which they implemented the same day. This will potentially save me lots of money. I was afraid we would have to tear into the house walls or floor. They were able to come out the same day and they arrived when they said they would. I ended up asking them to run their camera through the vent stack since they were here with the equipment, and they did that quickly. We didnâ t see any issues. Hopefully their very low-cost solution will solve the problem. Time will tell, but I am very very happy with their service."

French Drains questions, answered by experts

To unclog a plumbing vent, you first need to locate it. Look at your home's roofline. The plumbing vent will be a vertical pipe sticking straight up from the roof. Since this pipe runs all the way to the main drain underneath your house, you should also be able to find it in the attic.

It is okay to use a drain auger on a toilet, just make sure you are using the correct tip size. The auger is a plumbing snake with a protective sleeve to protect the porcelain toilet bowl from getting scratched. Using too large of an auger can cause the snake to loop back and damage the inside of the drain and plumbing.

Unlike regular cleanings, snaking your sewer line should be done as needed. There’s no reason to snake your sewer line if you don’t have any noticeable issues, like slow drainage or plugged drains. You can add it to your regular sewer cleaning checklist as a prevention method (on the same 18- to 22-month schedule), but it’s not always necessary.

There are a couple of things you can do to help prevent your French drain grate from clogging. First, keep yard debris clear so it doesn’t wash into the drain and clog the grate. You can also install a screen or filter over the grate to prevent large pieces of debris from entering the access point.

Boiling water helps unclog a drain, but usually only with a harder abrasive such as baking soda or vinegar. On its own, it isn’t the most effective tool. In addition, you shouldn’t use boiling water if you have PVC pipes, as it can soften or melt them. Use a plunger or enlist the help of a pro if you have plastic pipes.
