"The staff seem to be really good and professional people. The reason for my 2-star rating is that the work done simply didn't deliver on expectations of durability. There are sections of my driveway where nearly all of the seal coating came off in less than 9 months, so I am going to have to re-do the job myself. This is not what I had in mind when I paid over $1,100 (a fair price, if it would have lasted longer). I understand that the work isn't covered anymore, as I didn't report it until the thaw revealed so much was missing, and I'm not upset with Merit or their staff. Yes, using recycled asphalt millings is an eco-friendly alternative compared to concrete. Millings are reclaimed pieces of gravel that are recycled into aggregate that can be used on driveways, patios, walkways, basketball courts, tennis courts, and more.

While some areas may allow for a slope of up to 20%, this is often the maximum slope for driveways, with a few exceptions of up to 25%. Other regions may have a maximum of 12%, 15%, or 18%, so check with your local building department to ensure you’re laying a driveway that is up to code for your location.

In most cases, you don’t need a permit to repave your driveway, although some exceptions exist. If you’re widening your driveway and plan on widening the apron as well, you’ll usually need a permit from the Department of Transportation in your area. This permit costs between $50 and $300 in most cases. Most municipalities will also require a certified and insured contractor do the work relating to the apron and curb cut. You can contact your building department or ask your paving company if you need a permit. Your driveway professional will usually pull the permit for you.

The recommended minimum amount for a paver base is 4 inches. From there, it depends on the kind of traffic the pavers will see and the current soil conditions. Two inches of paver base won’t create the amount of stability and support that pavers need to remain securely in place over time.

Driveway pavers are often worth the cost. Paver types like cobblestone, brick, and concrete are highly durable, and permeable paver options can be tremendously eco-friendly. While you may pay more for a paver driveway, you’ll see great returns from the increased curb appeal and low maintenance compared to other types of driveways.
