You can put new siding over clapboards, but it’s not recommended. Some sidings, like vinyl siding, can go over clapboards with sheathing like a foam layer in between. However, it’s best to remove clapboard siding if you plan on replacing it with new siding. Burying wood clapboards underneath new siding can create risks of rot and mold, or hidden insect damage. It can also create warping issues over time. Removing clapboards allows you to properly install a new sheathing, as well as clean up the exterior wall and look for any signs of damage.

You should stain your home's cedar siding every three to seven years for maximum protection and to maintain its appearance. Homeowners who live in harsh climates with high humidity and lots of direct sunlight should plan staining every three years, while those who live in milder locations can plan on seven. In particularly harsh climates, consider using an opaque stain variety for the longest-lasting protection.

Traditionally, you place a layer of ⅜-inch foam board beneath aluminum siding. This gives you a smooth surface to which you can fasten the trim and siding. Beneath the foam board, you should have some kind of waterproof sheathing to further protect your home from water damage. It’s possible this sheathing is already under your current siding.

Siding pros typically charge by the square foot when providing estimates for siding projects. They’ll take the material cost and add in an estimated labor fee, and some contractors will include an additional upcharge to account for profit, waste, and unexpected issues. Another important price factor your pro will consider is the quality of your home’s current siding, which they’ll need to remove, and your home’s sheathing. If pros have to make any additional repairs to your home’s exterior, the added labor will also influence your final siding cost.

To calculate how much siding you need for exterior walls, first measure the height and width of the rectangular walls. For the triangular gable walls, measure the width and then the height from the ground to the tallest gable point.

  • For the rectangular walls, the calculation is: length x height

  • For the triangular gable walls, the calculation is: (length x height) / 2

Once you add these up, include an additional 10% to account for any wastage.
