"Dan (The Technician) and his Apprentice (Brody) were EXCELLENT) and would give them more than 5 STARS IF POSSIBLE! We have used Dan at Current Electric several times with difficult tasks but he seems to always find a way to get the project done! "I would hire Jim and his team at JLK Contractor Services again any time, they were quick to respond, and came prepared for the project and did excellent work. We had 5 overhead light fixtures wired and installed in three rooms and a closet, a bath fan installed, new outlets installed and conduit run for the garage, and office Ethernet installed. I had shopped around and had an idea of the cost and Jim s team came in under my initially planned budget. Great work JLK, many thanks!"

"Jim was very fast at coming to evaluate what we all needed to have done. He did a great job and cleaned up after he was finished. While he was here we had an issue come up for another electrical problem and he ordered the part and came back as soon as he got the part. Will definitely hire him again when we need electrical work."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

No, you should never plug a generator directly into a wall outlet in your house. This practice is extremely dangerous, often illegal, and can cause "back-feeding," where power from the generator flows back into utility lines, creating a life-threatening hazard for utility workers. It can also damage your home's electrical system, including appliances like pumps and HVAC fans. If the main power is restored while the generator is connected, it can destroy the generator and cause an electrical fire. To safely connect a generator, you must use a professionally installed transfer switch or an interlocking kit, which prevents back-feeding by disconnecting your home from the utility grid before the generator provides power.

Energy output depends on turbine size, average wind speed at your site, and system efficiency. A 5 kW turbine in a good wind location can generate 8,000 to 12,000 kilowatt-hours per year, which may cover a large portion of an average home’s needs. Accurate output estimates require a professional wind assessment and a review of your household’s energy usage patterns.

While the rating will tell you how many watts the refrigerator needs at the peak of its cycle, it requires additional wattage to start. At the bare minimum, you’ll need a 1,500-watt generator to get the fridge up and running after a blackout. A 2,000-watt generator should be sufficient for most home refrigerators.

If you’re wondering whether gas generators produce carbon monoxide, know that natural gas generators do not produce carbon monoxide if they are functioning properly, as natural gas burns cleanly. However, if the generator malfunctions and the gas does not burn completely, there is potential for carbon dioxide to be produced. To prevent malfunctions, it's crucial to perform regular maintenance, including running the generator weekly and scheduling professional inspections every 6 to 12 months. Also, be sure to test your carbon monoxide detectors regularly to ensure they function in the rare case of the generator producing carbon monoxide.

You may need a permit for a portable generator if you’ll be installing a transfer switch for your primary residence or similar work. Otherwise, a permit for other uses may not be necessary. Check your local building codes or ask a local generator installer for more information about your local regulations.
