"We purchased Wasco Windows for our entire house many years ago. We recently had warranty repair on 2 windows. Steve was on time for the appointment and ready to work. He fixed both spring issues right away. He commented that the windows still look great...which I agree with."

"Empire, from start to finish, we’re professional and very knowledgeable of their products. The crew that came to install my windows were incredible. They worked well together and paid attention to every detail. I had 16 windows installed in 2 days. They look wonderful and I’d have no problems with hiring this company again. (Due to Covid, it made it a bit difficult for the availability of the materials to make my windows. It took some waiting, but I see that as beyond Empire’s responsibility and has no basis for me to have issues with them.)"

"The technician arrived on time, was courteous and prepared. He cleaned up afterwards. I was totally satisfied. Would definitely hire him again, and will recommend him. He installed my storm door, and replaced the siding damaged by chipmunks."

Window Door Contractors questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can replace the screen without removing the door in most cases depending on the frame holding the screen. Doors with removable spline and screen frames make it a snap to replace the mesh while the door remains in place. The best part is that it’s a simple DIY project requiring a few tools in addition to the screen material.

It is generally recommended to remove window screens for the winter, especially in climates with heavy snow, freezing rain, or frigid temperatures. Removing them helps prevent damage to the screen mesh and frames that can be caused by ice and moisture buildup between the screen and the window. Taking out the screens also allows more natural light and warmth into your home during shorter winter days and makes it easier to clean your windows thoroughly. In warmer climates where harsh weather is not a concern, the decision is more about personal preference; some homeowners prefer the clearer view, while others leave them in for convenience.

Professionals clean window screens the same way a homeowner can—by removing the screens and cleaning them with a sponge. A window cleaning pro may come with better equipment, like a high powered wet/dry vacuum or pressure washer to speed up the process and achieve a deeper clean.

Most windows last for 15 to 30 years, depending on the frame material and the glass quality, but most will require repairs during that time. Windows gradually lose efficiency, so it’s usually best to have a window repair technician inspect and service your windows every five to 10 years. You should also repair your windows if you experience the following:

  • Leaks

  • Drafts

  • Difficulty opening or closing

  • Sudden increases in heating and cooling bills

  • Outdoor noise becomes more audible

  • Signs of physical damage

Window repairs cost $175 to $615, depending on the type of repair. Because double-hung windows have two sashes and multiple pieces of hardware, like locks and handles, there are many parts that can break over time. Repairing locks, latches, or other hardware costs about $75 to $200 and is easy to DIY. Fixing one or multiple sashes costs about $200 to $600.
