You might have heard that closing vents in unused rooms can help with energy efficiency, but it’s never a good idea to block air vents completely. Fully closing vents can create a buildup of pressure inside your ducts, which can lead to leaks, holes, or other problems. Instead, you can shut your vents partially (between 50% and 75%) in unoccupied parts of your home.

A floor return vent needs a clearance of between 6 and 12 inches in front of it. You should not place large furniture, such as shelves, drapes, or couches, directly in front of a return air vent.

While most air conditioners can last between 10 and 20 years, they will only last this long (or longer) if properly taken care of. Routine maintenance and inspections help keep your AC unit running in tip-top shape but understanding what factors will decrease its lifespan will also help keep your unit running cool.

Some things that shorten your AC’s lifespan include:

  • Extreme outdoor conditions, like high humidity or extensive salt spray 

  • Improper installation

  • Extended run times, either by the unit being too small or the thermostat setting too low

  • Not performing required maintenance

You have two different types of air vents in your home: supply and return air vents. Your supply air vents are responsible for pushing air into your home. Meanwhile, return air vents draw warmer air back into the ductwork to condition it by removing the warm molecules from it. Both types of vents are necessary to a working HVAC system and a comfortable home.
