"Dream Home Renovations improved my home. Exhaust from the initial fan was going into the attic, so they installed a new fan and ductwork for proper ventilation. I had them install another fan in a more challenging environment. I also hired them to create a stud in a wall, install towel racks, build a cedar soffit and make other repairs. They were small jobs, but having them done correctly has made a big difference."

Lawn Tool Repair questions, answered by experts

There are a few reasons why a lawn mower cord won’t pull, including an engine jam, a tangled cord, a broken recoil starter, or poor maintenance. To troubleshoot, turn the mower off. Then, inspect the cord, look for any tangles, and gently pull it to identify where the resistance starts. If you’re not seeing any obstructions, you may need to call in a professional for repairs.

Lawnmowers require seasonal maintenance to continue working correctly. With routine maintenance, you can extend its life to the fullest, which is around 10 years for push mowers and 5-8 years for riding mowers. To keep your lawn mower working correctly, you’ll want to take the following steps at least once a year:

  • Replace the spark plug

  • Change the oil

  • Drain the fuel tank

  • Clean the mowing deck (ideally, after every mow)

  • Replace the air filter

  • Check the carburetor

  • Sharpen the blades

  • Fog the engine

  • Check the tires

Before your lawn mower quits working entirely, it’ll likely give you some signs of wear and tear that indicate a repair is needed. Signs that you might need repairs to your lawn mower include:

  • Oil leaks

  • Vibrating engine

  • Smoking exhaust

  • Increase in time to mow

  • Unusual noises

  • Increase in gas consumption

Repair costs range from $50 to $400, depending on issue severity, part replacements, and labor.

Tune up your lawn mower once a year or every 100 hours of run-time.
