Managed to discover that, somehow, a previous pro, specifically hired to install a toilet because I didn't want to make an amateur mistake, made an amateur mistake and never installed a needed spacer for the wax ring. This somehow got by for ~2 years without anyone finding out the ugly truth that the toilet had no proper seal. Also, explains the sewer gas occasionally venting into the bathroom. ?‍?
