"GS engineering, and Sim Singh in particular have been fantastic to work with. I am a general contractor and have had to hire a number of structural firms over time. Sim offers a very rare combination of a high level of skill in a highly technical field (specifically engineering) a high level of professionalism, and an overall pleasant personality/demeanor. As long as he has the time to take my calls, it is doubtful that I would ever call a different structural engineer than Sim."

"Before buying I needed a specialist to look deeper into a potential issue, Greg was very knowledgable, friends and as it turns out just the guy for the job. He exposed all the issues and made my choice of not buying a house an easy one. Great to work with, has pest and structural qualification and was very reasonable. I'd highly recommend him and will be calling him again soon when I find another house."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

Yes, professionals reinforce the foundation with additional supports or piers to prevent future sinking.

A 4-inch-thick concrete slab can support around 4,000 pounds per square foot if a contractor reinforces the slab with rebar, while that same slab without reinforcements will support closer to 1,000 pounds. For the purposes of a patio, 4 inches in thickness without reinforcement should suffice unless you’re installing heavy kitchen equipment or a hot tub on it. In those cases, reinforcing your slab and sticking with 4 inches of thickness should provide plenty of strength.

Structural engineers typically conduct inspections during a home sale or renovation, looking for signs of structural damage in various structures throughout the building, such as load-bearing walls, joists, beams, roofing trusses, foundations, and chimneys. Some of the warning signs that structural engineers check for include:

  • Dry rot

  • Infestation

  • Shifting or cracking foundations

  • Erosion

  • Water damage

  • Sagging, shifting, or damaged walls, ceilings, or roofing support

Proper licensing and experience in residential and commercial structural projects.

Foundation cracks that are 1/8 inch wide or less, aren’t uneven across the gap, and don’t continue widening over time are usually just normal settling cracks and don’t suggest structural issues. Horizontal cracks and stair-step cracks on foundation walls, any cracks that continue widening, are wider than 1/8 inch, or where one side juts out beyond the other, are often indicative of structural damage.
