He even came over to do a quick repair when he was in the middle of a job just so we could get our tile installed on time. He's a hard worker and did a really nice job doing multiple large repairs to our home working 9-10 hours at a time to finish. I wish all contractors were as good as this one! Yes, wainscoting is installed directly over drywall. However, ensure the drywall is in good shape since it will support the wainscoting. If the drywall has issues, such as holes, mold, or mildew, repair them before installing the wainscoting. Alternatively, you can install a plywood substrate before attaching the trim.

You may need to replace drywall because of smoke damage. If the drywall is covered in soot, you may be able to clean it, but it will require a lot of time and effort.
