"Share review Embed review Write an update Edit review 11/11/2019 First to Review Mt. Baker Handyman SVS went above and beyond to do the fire-lane striping for us. When quoting the bid and then performing the job, they were punctual, reasonable, professional, responsive, and communicated well. It was great to work with someone who let us know the time they would likely be on-site and then followed up with a phone call that day confirming when they would be arriving. They arrived when they said they would and did an excellent stripping job of the fire-lane that was very professional looking. When someone vandalized the stripping job by painting over parts of it with white paint, they arranged to restripe the fire-lane by withing two days of our calling them. They cleaned up the mess at a reasonable charge and did a beautiful re-stripping job that was as good if not better looking than the original one! We highly recommend them and will consider them for future paving/stripping jobs which are coming up in the spring of 2020.-T Onders & L Wilbur, Kirkland WA"

"I’ve had the the chance to have Nautilus construction help with a bunch of projects, and I can honestly say he’s one of the most reliable and hard-working guys out there. He doesn’t just show up and go through the motions — he actually knows his stuff, asks the right questions, and makes sure the job is done right the first time. He’s detail-oriented, takes pride in his work, and never cuts corners. Whether it’s new installs or problem-solving on tougher ones he stays focused and gets it done efficiently. If you’re looking for someone who takes his work seriously and runs a business with integrity, I highly recommend his company. You’ll be in good hands."

"This is a family business here in Blaine and they are GREAT! Randy came out and worked with me on fees, as I'm on acreage, but very little is cut. Phone and email gets an immediate reply. Once price was agreed, Justin came out with the crew. He introduced himself and verified that needed to be cut. He took great care to not drive the truck on the corner of my driveway because of mud, but I didn't care about that. Still, it was nice to have him note it and say something. Justin is a young man that iss very professional, has lots of common sense, and great customer service skills. I hired RNR (Birchbay Lawn Care) because my former landscaper retired and the guy that bought his business was very rude and wanted way too much money for my small yard. This company is great and they do exceptional work. I like receiving my bills via email and they have an automated portal to immediately pay via bank ACH or credit card, all in a secure environment. I appreciate companies like RNR / Birchbay Landscaping that leverage technology, but are very responsive. I can't say enough about this company and the service. Please support this local company. They will serve you and take good care of you. All in a positive way and without any attitude!"

Fire Pit Installation questions, answered by experts

Baking soda is an effective fire reduction method. However, flour and baking powder are very dangerous around flames. Flour is flammable and it can also conduct electricity. The combination can cause serious injury from electrical shock and worsen the situation by adding fuel to the fire. Baking powder is also not an option as it's also highly flammable.

No, it is not safe to use an outlet that sparked. A spark from an outlet could indicate a short circuit, loose or frayed wiring, or other serious damage. Continuing to use an outlet that sparks can increase the risk of electrical shock, electrical fires, and other hazards. It's important to turn off the power to the outlet at the circuit breaker if possible and avoid using the outlet until a licensed electrician has inspected and repaired it.

Beyond having an inspection, it’s important to do chimney maintenance at least annually to be certain the chimney is safe to use. Cleaning the flue of any built-up particles, creosote, and soot reduces the risk of fire. Fortunately, the cost of hiring a pro to do a chimney inspection often includes a chimney cleaning, so you may not have an extra expense for maintenance.

Your smoke detector might be too high in some homes or circumstances to reach yourself. If you feel unsafe getting on a ladder to replace your hardwired smoke detector, call a licensed electrician or local handyman to knock this project off your to-do list. If you have a battery-operated smoke detector, your local fire department can change the batteries or help you replace the detector—just make sure you call the non-emergency number.

In any case, do not let this project go unresolved, as it could turn into a huge safety issue.

The damper, located just above the firebox, can open or close the chimney flue. The damper should remain closed unless there’s a fire burning in the fireplace. Closing the damper prevents energy loss through the chimney and cold air from seeping into the home during the winter. Opening the damper helps maintain airflow when there is a fire and prevents smoke and gases from venting into the house.
