"We embarked on a large landscaping project in our small yard that included both front and backyards. We employed Joe’s Lawn Service. The major concern was replacing the old retaining wall in the back that was reaching the end of its life. It was built using rail road ties and many of those were rotting. We wanted a block wall to replace it. Other aspects of the project included installing steps in both front and back yards using block and paving stones. In the front we wanted a landing pad for folks arriving in cars. Guests should be able to step out curbside onto a safe spot and ascend to the front door on safe steps – thus avoiding the perilous climb up a steep driveway - often filled with cars – that is factually lethal in winter. Texans were born to shovel a lot of stuff, but not snow. We were new at a landscaping project of this scale and apprehensive in uncertainty, particularly cost and expectation of final result. The final result exceeded expectation and was within the original estimate and budget, with one exception. We changed our mind and expanded one element. It was worth the added expense. We are satisfied with the result. I was rather amazed by the professionalism and expertise employed. The men formed a high performing team of skilled planners and craftsmen. They were always on time. There were no delays. There was no standing around waiting to be told what to do – they knew what to do. When Joe agreed to do something, he did it. For those of us that believe in honest, hard work, it was a true pleasure to watch – as I did daily. The work was heavy, hot, and dusty. They carried in wheelbarrows every bit of block, gravel, sand, and paving stone into a backyard that had no access for a vehicle. And they carried out every old timber. Although my language skills are minimal, they made it easier with their patient, polite demeanors. I guess you could call them gentlemen. I particularly noted their respect for each other. Consequently, I have enormous respect for this outfit."

"We had a disaster that needed to be taken care of and we found J&R construction through Home Advisor. Joel, Rafael and Solomon were very professional and very competent. They not only did excellent work but they also accommodated our schedule, which was not easy. Their work was excellent and the price was quite fair. I recommend them most highly. They are also nice guys and easy to get along with."

"This company, so far, has been keeping in touch with me, letting me know when to expect services (one done so far) and when the next project will be worked on. The major reason I hired them is because their front office is friendly and articulate. The reason for continuing with them are clear communication and reasonable estimates."

Paving Services questions, answered by experts

The ideal distance between stepping stones depends on your design preference. A general rule is to place them about 24 inches apart from center to center to match an average person's stride. Another common approach is to leave about 6 inches of space between the edges of each stone; this can be adjusted to fit the path's total length without cutting pavers. If you plan to plant between the stones, leave at least 6 to 8 inches of space to give the plants room to grow.

The best ways to increase the lifespan of your driveway are to carry out proper maintenance and get repairs done quickly. First, reseal your driveway every one to three years to protect it from the elements. If you start to notice significant cracks, hire a professional to diagnose the problem before it gets more serious. You can also use sand instead of salt when de-icing your driveway (since salt is corrosive) and clean your driveway annually using a pressure washer to keep it in tip-top shape.

Driveway paving costs around $4,500 on average, but depending on many factors, you could pay anywhere from $2,500 to $6,600 or more. The size of your driveway will usually be the most significant factor, with more square footage increasing your costs. You can expect to pay between $2 and $15 per square foot for paving services. Some other factors that play a role include the following:

  • Quality of the materials

  • Contractor’s experience and expertise

  • Site preparation and grading, if necessary

  • Layout of your driveway

Many asphalt companies have experience with tar and chip paving, but not all. The process is unique enough—and not incredibly common enough—that you may have to look around for a tar and chip specialist. However, speaking with a driveway company is a great place to start, especially if they have experience with multiple materials.

In most cases, driveway repair is worth the investment. Your driveway is one of the first things people see when they look at your home, so repairing cracks, chips, and potholes can improve your home’s curb appeal and overall value. Repairing your driveway is also almost always more affordable than replacing it entirely—an average of $1,765 compared to the cost of replacing a driveway, which typically costs around $5,000.
