"Excellent quality electrical work done in a very timely manner from start to finish. Everything from initial schedule and assessment to finalizing the work as promised and in a time promised was completed professionally. Their cost is higher than expected for electrical work but the timeliness and quality was excellent. I will continue using them for future electrical work and will most likely try their other services such as plumbing."

"They are my go to electricians. I have had others out in the past but stopped doing that once Varsity Electric completed our first of multiple electric projects. I have had them do light fixture replacements, troubleshooting and repairs, adding outdoor electrical and replace all outlet receptacles in the house and bringing them up to code. They have always been prompt, courteous, professional and knowledgeable. I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking to have electrical work done."

"Great communication, competitive pricing, invaluable advice, above and beyond service I first used Capitol Builders when starting out on my project to self build a family home. John and his brother helped me get out of the ground. The slab was perfectly square and got me off to a great start. Later on, I contracted out their electrical services, under Miller’s Electrical, to get the service into my house. Throughout all my dealings, communication has been great. Prices have been very fair. They also have been amazing at sharing their experience and wisdom on parts of my build that I have been doing myself. For all of the above reasons (plus more), I would highly recommend their services. When I need to call a professional, these guys will always be the people I will call."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

You don’t need to be an electrician to change a light bulb. You also don’t have to be an electrician to replace a light fixture with another compatible one. But, if you are installing a light fixture for the first time, it’s worth hiring a licensed professional for the job.

While a handyperson may charge a bit less, a qualified professional can make sure everything is up to code and working exactly as it should be. This is especially true for more complicated lighting projects.

A multimeter does not measure frequency, charge, inductance, and other electrical quantities. Instead, it measures voltage (AC and DC), current, and resistance.

Common warning signs of an overloaded electrical panel or meter box include frequent circuit breaker tripping, flickering or dimming lights, scorch or burn marks, and a burning scent coming from the panel. A circuit breaker trips as a protective measure to prevent overheating and potential fires. If you observe any of these signs, turn off the affected circuit breaker and move some devices to a different circuit. If the problem persists after turning the breaker back on, you should contact a professional electrician to resolve the issue.

GFCI stands for ground fault circuit interrupter, which means it has the ability to detect a ground fault and shut the circuit down before it creates hazards. General breakers may also do that because ground faults can cause overloads, but they’re more focused on amp overloads from any cause. GFCIs are often installed in specific outlets, but breakers can come with GFCI capabilities built in for broader ground fault protection.

It’s not a good idea to mix LED and incandescent Christmas lights if you can avoid it. LEDs and incandescents can have significantly different electrical current needs. This difference can lead to a higher risk of problems and failure for both light strands. When possible, switch all your lights over to one kind or the other for the best results. Do not connect the different types of light strings to each other, and avoid linking them to the same circuit.
