I recently purchased a 200+ year old colonial farmhouse with a centrally located brick chimney that has seen a lot of use and abuse over the years. We wanted to switch from our expensive propane heating system to a wood burning stove, and we hired Matt to diagnose what needed to be done to use the existing historic chimney. Matt figured out that this chimney had many years ago been lined with a now decaying 8" metal liner with mortar poured in around it. It had a number of thimbles going to the kitchen and living room, and the portion of the chimney above the roof line had decayed to the point that it was no longer salvageable. They showed us photos demonstrating the need for the various aspects of work. After we accepted his quote, which we found to be reasonable for the scope of work, Matt came by and created the brick hearth. We're very pleased with the way it turned out. He demolished the chimney above the roof line and prepared the chimney for the 6" rigid stainless steel liner. They installed the 6" chimney liner and built up the new chimney and flashing. Josh performed a lot of the brick work, he took his time and was very meticulous in his craft. They finished the chimney, poured in insulation around the liner, and installed a nice bluestone cap. The chimney looks beautiful and appropriate for our historic home, we are very happy with the work. They had to break out some of the inside brick to install the new thimble for the liner, and the brickwork Josh and Matt did looks wonderful. They used some original bricks (which we had extras of from an old chimney, thankfully) and even took the time to mix the special lime mortar that would match the mortar in our historic home. They sealed and covered up the old thimble into the kitchen. They had to work around some weather, which stretched the project out longer than anticipated, but they were able to have the chimney system functioning so the wood stove, when delivered, could be immediately hooked up and used. With some of the unforeseen challenges they ran into with this particular chimney, I was concerned that the original quote would be exceeded. However, when it came time to settle up, they asked only for the original price I was quoted. We have several children and Matt and his team were very careful, polite, and friendly when they came across the kids. They cleaned up after themselves and put on booties or put down protection to ensure our flooring wasn't damaged during all of the work. Noah especially was kind to the children and took the time to field my son's questions while working very hard to assist Matt and Josh with their tasks. We've been using our wood stove and chimney for almost a month now and it's worked beautifully. My wife and I fully recommend Matt and Black Moose Chimney. I didn't have a chance to have my regular plumber lined up ahead of time, and they weren't available, but they recommended Buds. These people were wonderful. They understood how flummoxed I was and how urgently I needed it done. Through not fault of their own (or mine) they had to come back 3 times before it was done -- each time, they did everything possible to work me in around their existing schedule to get it all done as quickly as possible. Both the plumber, Scott, and the woman on the other end of the phone were super nice and efficient. Price was less than I feared, and Scott had very good suggestions for optimizing my kitchen plumbing design. I would definitely recommend them, and expect to use them again. Peggy, in the office, helped me balance between the look we wanted and the price we could afford, and when we found a match, she snagged a piece and kept it ready for me so that they could install as soon as we were ready. I took a kitchen floor plan in to the office and we discussed possible options for how to support the part of the counter-top that would be used as an open space for kitchen stools. The in-store designer said that they would work with me to find the best way to support the counter-top, and agreed that I could use table legs, as I had planned, with possibly some additional support. I didn't realize until they installed it that this mean they would tell me I'd have to call a contractor to come in an install a support after they installed the counter-top. I thought they would come prepared to install any needed support themselves, which was why I had the discussion in the first place. Also, a few days before installation, I went to the web site to see if there was anything I needed to do ahead of time (empty or remove drawers, call a plumber, etc.). There was no information about the installation process online, so I just did what seemed logical (turns out not QUITE what was needed, but mostly ok). I did discuss with the person who came to the house for the initial measurements that I was planning to reuse the existing sink. He talked to me about what different sink options would mean in terms of the countertop installed -- whether it would require seams in the stone -- but neglected to tell me that I would need to hire a plumber to reinstall the sink. Apparently they can remove the sink, but not reinstall it. The first I knew that I would have to call the plumber was when they asked me; "When is the plumber coming?" They did not have a plumber working with them or recommend a plumber, just told me that I would need to call someone. So, instead of having a plumber all lined up to make the installation go smoothly, I ended up paying for an emergency plumbing visit that afternoon, since I was blindsided by the need for one. But, other than the communication glitches, the installation went well and it does look very nice.
