Starting in the late 1980’s as small partnership building and renovating homes in the Pioneer Valley, Thayer Street Associates, Inc. has expanded to include not only residential work but commercial projects for retail businesses, offices, educational facilities, restaurants, medical and dental practices, hospitals, hotels, municipal offices, churches, and historical restoration work. TSA has not only grown its general contracting and project management business, but from modest beginnings, has developed a cabinet and millwork shop capable of meeting the requirements of clients and architects to produce casework in quantity and of the highest quality. Throughout our expansion, we at TSA have strived to maintain a commitment to conduct business with our clients —both residential and commercial— in an open, honest, and personal way. With this as a goal, we have built a reputation based upon cooperation and positivity which is ultimately beneficial to all involved. To this end, we have developed a network of good relations with architects, engineers, subcontractors, and materials providers. We assure excellent communication, efficiency, high quality finish products, and timely completion of the work. Please contact us for your next project. Upon request we will provide ample references in the many project types mentioned here whether it is a home, addition, kitchen or bathroom, office remodel, retail store build-out, and more.

Cabinet Refacing and Refinishing questions, answered by experts

When it comes to painting kitchen cabinets, most professionals tend to use latex paint. However, acrylic paint is also a great option, especially if you're working with wood. Along with the paint type, you'll also want to think about the finish. For kitchen cabinets, the best paint finishes are usually semi-gloss or high-gloss. These finishes are incredibly durable, which is important in high-traffic areas like kitchens. Matte finishes, on the other hand, are less durable.

If you want to spray paint your cabinets without sanding, you have a few options to rough up the kitchen cabinet surface before priming. First, you can try using mineral spirits and a rough sponge on the cabinet surface to give it some grit for the primer. The second option is to use liquid sandpaper on the cabinet surface so it deglosses the finish and will be ready for primer.

Liquid sandpaper is a solvent used to soften existing layers of paint and make them porous enough that you can effectively apply a new coat of paint. You rub the liquid sandpaper on, wait for it to work, and wipe it off—no literal sanding is involved. Liquid sandpaper can save time and is helpful if parts of the cabinet are hard to reach with standard sandpaper. However, like paint stripper, liquid sandpaper creates dangerous fumes and must be used with care indoors. And unlike sanding, it can’t fix any scratches or dings in your cabinets.

It’s usually worth your investment to refinish old or fading cabinets. Refinishing your cabinets can be an excellent and budget-friendly way to makeover your kitchen. You have a wide range of paint and stain colors to choose from, so you can achieve whatever look you desire without having to replace your existing cabinets. Plus, it's one of the home renovation projects that can help increase the value of your home.

Technically, you can paint over stained cabinets without sanding. There are specialty paints that are made precisely for not sanding cabinets. However, many interior cabinet paints work just as well.

To make sure you have a smooth surface without sanding, you’ll need to degrease the cabinets thoroughly, add a bonding coat for strength, add primer, and then finally paint your cabinets. It’s still a process regardless of whether you sand your cabinets.
