"Very well, Very prompt response to request for estimate. Open about process, notified when all the parts were in, called ahead to see if they could come early. Plumber was upfront that he was a plumber and not a phone app expert. Installed shut off valve and took me through all the ways we could bypass if system ever failed. Fast."

"Reached out to multiple plumbing companies for a quote on a water treatment system I wanted installed. Tyler from Miller Plumbing solutions came out to my house and I was blown away with his knowledge and understanding of the treatment system that would work best for our home. He left me with options and didn’t pressure me into any Avenue . I had other estimates that were cheaper but each technician I dealt with seemed to just give me a price and didn’t have much more information on why. I’m very happy I went with Miller Plumbing solutions the value of their service was well worth it."

"Excellent!!! The plumber was informative and so quick. He went over what he would need to do and how much it would cost. The person that took my appointment was also very courteous. They said between 8-10am and he was there at around 8:30am a lot sooner then expected. I really appreciate that as a single female he didn't ask personal questions, if I was married or what my husband, boyfriend or father could do to help me like other service people have from other companies."

"Charlie was exceptionally knowledgeable about West Shore's bath/shower products. He confirmed it would be a great solution to the mystery of how my second-floor bathroom kept leaking into my living room every two years after the caulking got saturated and mildewed since 2/2016. Finally, I decided to bite the bullet and I contacted West Shore, knowing that simply replacing the bathtub wouldn't solve the leak. West Shore wouldn't try to re-open my ceiling again. Instead, they removed the tub and tiles and grouting on the walls. Everything was clear. There was mildew, rotted wood, AND an old leaking pipe from the shower head down to the valve diverter from between the shower and the faucet for the bath. The team was amazing. I had asked Jake, the lead, to let me know if, when the plumbing was exposed, he found what caused the leak. He was able to explain in simple terms how water would only splatter if someone was taking a shower. Together Jake and Sean finished the installation, and to very stringent standards. It was done in 1 day and I have been very pleased with the West Shore product and installation. I love the warranty, too."

"Troy-Bilt-Construction were very professional, arrived on time, returned calls promptly, and did an OUTSTANDING job for me.  It turned out that renovating a 60 year old home is not easy -- the old dishwasher (unbeknownst to me since I hadn't used it in years) had leaked and the cabinets were damaged.  In addition, the plumbing under the sink was a mess and needed to be replaced.  (The plumber who came to repair the pluming issues were in total agreement with Troy's assessment of the situation.)  At the timeTroy discovered the issues, he promptly fixed what he could at that time, advised me how to proceed with the plumber, and ensured there would be no more leaks until the plumber could come.  He spent extra time on the job the first day just to ensure everything was OK and nothing was leaking.
A plumber came the next morning and fixed the plumbing issues then Troy came as soon as I called him to finish the job.  He and his crew finished installing the counter tops, added a few touches to make them look better, and did such a professional job you can't even see where the sealants are.  He is very conscientious, wants to ensure the job he does is the best it can be, and I would definitely call him again for any work I need done.

"Fitch Services has done plumbing work for me (water heater replacement in restricted space requiring repiping of water meter). They did fantastic work and the cost was approximately 1/4 of the amount that the major plumbing companies in Charlottesville were asking for. You read that right: 25% of the cost for the exact same work (and they were flexible, allowing for me to purchase the water heater and handle delivery on my own). I am going to exclusively use them for plumbing going forward and will also try their electrical and HVAC service."

Plumbing questions, answered by experts

The toilet should rest 10, 12, or 14 inches from the back wall. As for other clearances, 15 inches is the minimum distance from the flange to any side wall or nearby fixture, including the shower, tub, and sink. Modern codes also require at least 24 inches of clear space in front of the toilet.

Be sure to consider how often you may need access to your pipes in the future. This can help you decide if you want to install a basic PVC backflow preventer or spring for a clear or removable one.

If you think you’ll need access to your plumbing often, or if your pipes have a history of problems, it’s probably worth spending a little more for something you can look into without removing the backwater preventer.

Toilets typically connect to your main vent stack, a vertical pipe that runs through all finished levels of your home and exits through the roof. It’s located behind the walls, but if you have an unfinished basement or a utility closet, you may find a portion of it running the vertical length of the space. Some basement toilets use an air admittance valve instead, which is a small vent located in the wall directly behind the toilet that extends upward a few feet from the drain.

If you've discovered a rather frightening buildup of brown and black gunk below your shower cover, you're not alone. The smelly sludge is often a collection of mildew and biofilm. Biofilm comes from the breakdown of soap scum, hair, skin cells, and bacteria that collects during shower time. It's quite common in a humid space and relatively easy to clean with a gentle DIY cleaning solution such as baking soda and vinegar.

Whether an earthquake gas shut-off valve is required depends on your location and circumstances. Certain cities, states, and even insurance providers mandate them, especially in areas with high seismic activity. In California, for example, while laws vary by county, most jurisdictions require a valve to be installed in newly constructed homes or when a home is sold or renovated. The Los Angeles Municipal Code specifically requires a licensed contractor for installation. Even if not required by law, installing a seismic shut-off valve is a wise safety measure. These devices automatically cut off the flow of gas during an earthquake, which can prevent gas leaks, fires, and explosions. It is recommended to check with your local building department for specific laws regarding installation, permitting, and inspections, and to ensure the valve you install is on your city's list of approved models.
