"Appleton Campbell just did a complicated 2-day gas furnace/AC unit installation attached our home. It was, probably, the most professional and well-handled vendor experience I have ever had, particularly with some complications that occurred due to things found after the old system was removed. From the sales process to the pre-project staff to the office staff who alerted me each time the crew was heading to my home, to the on-site crew of Mike W., Danny R. and Jake A., the experience was A+. Even when the one issue was presented, they came up with a solution and I remained confident they would. They were extremely clean and neat, during and after they were done. I did getting three bids for this and they were slightly higher than the others, but I felt more comfortable and frankly, I believe I got my moneys worth as they also had to fabricate and redo a complicated return and vent line, and they also moved the gas line, refrigerant line and other conduits/poles/switches to a more convenient area than with my prior (similar but older) system. In short, I felt like the value was there. They also included a Home Savings Agreement for one year and left me with a consolidated notebook of all relevant documents. Cheapest is not always better, and with all they did, the pricing was very, very close. I've known AC for years in the community, but only used them on a couple of occasions. I've become a huge fan and will use them again (I have other systems!)."

Customers say: Quick response

"I had 3 ceiling fans installed in 3 separate rooms. Each one was switch operated, where the switch previously controlled a wall outlet. The work was done quickly, well within the estimated time. The price was estimated on the phone prior to the work being done. The install went well, the crew cleaned up after themselves very well. The only negative is that two of the three wall outlets are no longer grounded. I would hire them again, and am considering doing so for another project."

"I had a very good experience with Reddick & Sons from beginning to end. I contacted them via Angie's List about a quote for recessed lighting and they got back to me right away. They sent a representative out to see the work we wanted done. We wanted recessed lights put up in 3 rooms. I initially told them that I wanted 4 lights in each room. However, when the representative came out, he told my husband that we really only needed 2 lights rather than 4 in two of the rooms. I appreciate the fact that they made a recommendation that saved us some money, even though it meant they would not make as much on the job! The person who came to do the job showed up on time, was friendly and professional. I showed him the rooms and he got straight to work. He did a great job. We were very pleased with the final product. I would not hesitate to call on this company again."

"It went well.  The technician only needed to cut one hole in the ceiling for the wiring.
I had to call the company back to assist me with wiring a new slide dimmer for an additional charge.

"Perfectly. To start with, Mr. Rorer accomodated my tight schedule by bringing an assistant to complete the job in one day. The two of them got right to work in the morning, and both rooms were completed by late afternoon despite both rooms needing a good coat of primer before the color went on. They moved the furniture before they started, were clean and meticulous, and moved everything back in place when the job was done. They were even willing to help me re-arrange the furniture from the original placement. I am so pleased with their fair price and their work, I will most definitely use Rorer's Home Improvement again."

"The provider showed up on time and prepared.  There were some issues with the internal wiring of my house (1930s construction) that complicated installation.  He informed me of my two options -- one was to have the fan installed, but it could not be controlled by the wall switch, or the other was to rewire the wall switch and the wiring to the fan to allow the fan to be controlled by the wall switch -- at a substantial cost.  I liked that he was honest with my about my options rather than merely stating it would cost me extra to install the fan, given the age/condition of the wiring.

"Overall, it went quite well. I had a circuit that was 'acting up' - the outlets were loose when plugging in a cord and a GFCI that was intermittently tripping. I also had some surface mounted wiring that needed to be placed correctly - into the wall. I showed the technicians the GFCI that was acting up, the electrical panel, and the area where the outlets needed to be placed correctly. They then spent the next 90 minutes diagnosing the circuit and formulating a plan to resolve my GFCI circuit and outlets. They then presented a detailed description of what they proposed to do - with options to choose. A quick fix - replace the GFCI - and solved the problem, an intermediate fix, and the complete fix. We discussed the offers, and we selected the complete fix - change the breaker, GFCI, and devices (plugs, switches) on that circuit and burying the outlets (a more expensive option - more labor/ drywall damage) in the wall. They had to return to complete the work - at my request/schedule- three days later due to the amount of work needed to complete the job. An exceptionally professional job! The holes in the drywall were done with the aid of a level and numbered! Holes had to be drilled in the wall studs to run the wire - yet the holes were only big enough to get the drill in the wall and pass the wire while allowing for ease of drywall repair while mounting the boxes to the wall studs (my request too). They took their time in answering all my questions and cleaned up the area they were working in. They also did replace some bathroom ventilation fans - not part of the original quote - with some excellent timers for the fans! I highly recommend Beacon Electrical."

Ceiling Fans questions, answered by experts

Ceiling fans can be a great way to cool your home without the expensive utility bill of running an air conditioner. Plus, ceiling fans can sometimes run in both directions, pushing hot air down in winter and pulling cold air up in summer. With that said, air conditioning might be the only thing that helps if you live in a very warm climate.

Keeping dust off fans can keep them working optimally and help keep dust mites or bacteria from building up. Dust fans weekly with a duster, microfiber cloth, old pillowcase, or vacuum attachment. You can also try spraying a clean fan with a store-bought dust-repellent product or making a DIY dust-repellent with water and a small amount of liquid fabric softener mixed in.

Many ceiling fan mounts feature a design that can accommodate slight slopes by using a ball joint mechanism at the end of the downrod. If your ceiling has a steeper slope than your fan allows for, you can install a downrod that will allow your fan to safely hang below the slope.

Many ceiling fan-rated electrical boxes tend to be made of metal. However, some electrical boxes may also be made of heavy-duty plastic that is reinforced with metal support structures. It may also have an attachment that connects directly to a ceiling joist. If you are ever ensure, consult with a licensed professional to get their insight on best practices and whether the installation is a safe one.

Fan power is measured by CFM, or cubic feet per minute. For every 1,000 feet of square footage in your attic, you need a minimum of 700 CFM. Steeper roofs may need larger fans or about 840 CFM.  You can figure the size of attic fan you need by multiplying the square footage of your attic floor by 0.7. (multiply by 1.2 for a steep roof and 1.15 for a dark roof). That number is the CFM required for your fan to run efficiently.
