"By far the most responsive and professional contractor we worked with.  Rain and other factors changed the date they could complete the work, but I was kept up-to-date with the changes and rescheduling.  Very good job with the repair, sealing and painting, will definitely call them again the next time we need exterior work done.

"They showed up towards the end of the time window.  They were quick and did everything I needed them to.  They gave me a couple of recommendations for work that could be done to perfect my electrical system with a quoted price but they did not pressure me to have it done.

"We decided on Oasis to build our deck because the estimate was less than two other estimates and because the owner, Tommy Harper, showed an understanding of what we wanted and offered good suggestions for improving our design.   He was prompt in meeting with us and in providing an estimate.  The work started as soon as the permit was approved and was completed in 7 days.   The workers worked hard and were very efficient.   The deck looks great.     We highly recommend Oasis and would use the company again.

"They did a number of handyman things like hang blinds, install new bathroom sink top, medicine cabinet, and caulk, and a new kitchen floor. They did a good job at the actual work, but it seemed very expensive to me for what I got. They also cleaned up fairly well, but did leave a couple of foot prints on the window sills where they had hung the blinds (not sure why they didn't use ladders). There was also significant confusion about setting up the timing of the work (but once that was done, they were prompt), as well as considerable confusion over the final bill and what was owed. The work was good, but the logistics were confusing and problematic."

Hello,\n\nWe are Ana & Matt, the husband and wife team behind Total Home Design & Remodeling. We know it is not easy to decide who you’ll entrust with your design project, and we are thankful that you’re considering us. \n\nCreating beautiful, functional interiors is our passion. We’re fortunate to be able to do it for a living. It is often hard work. But, the load is lightened by the team of craftsmen and vendors that we’ve assembled over the years. They share our passion, and our goals of premium quality and absolute satisfaction. It is because of them that we are able to deliver consistently amazing results. \n\nOur company has offered remodeling services to homeowners in Northern Virginia since 1999, and design and décor services since 2014. Over that time we’ve often been awarded and recognized for our great work and excellent customer service. More recently, the readers of Northern Virginia Magazine have recognized our company as one of the Northern Virginias top design and remodeling companies, and Ana as one of the top designers. In July of 2020, Alexandria Living Magazine recognized us as one of the area’s 12 Best Interior Designers. We have 5 star reviews on Houzz, Home Advisor, and Facebook, and have won the coveted Best of Houzz customer service award 5 years in a row. The list goes on and on. \n\nSincerely,\n\nMatt Cholko & Ana Djevenica

Driveway Gates questions, answered by experts

Yes, clean regularly, lubricate hinges or tracks, and inspect for damage to ensure smooth operation.

The best direction for a gate to swing depends on its location and purpose, but swinging inward is the general rule. An inward swing is often considered safer, prevents the gate from opening into public spaces like a sidewalk, and may be required by local building codes.

There are exceptions and specific considerations. If your property is on a slope, an inward swing might not be possible. For a deck gate, it's safest to have it swing away from any steps. In a backyard, the direction can be a matter of preference, though an inward swing can be helpful when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

Regardless of direction, ensure the gate can open fully without hitting any objects or blocking spaces. While an inward swing is standard, a gate that can swing both in and out offers the most flexibility if your setup allows for it.

Instead of a security door, you might opt for a heavy-duty screen door made from durable mesh, which allows better sunlight and airflow. Additionally, you could enhance security by installing strong locks on your existing door. A double-cylinder deadbolt provides robust security; however, be aware that some local laws prohibit them due to safety concerns during emergencies.

While many gate hinges are often made of extremely durable materials, such as galvanized steel, they can wear out after many years. How quickly they wear out also depends on how much use they’ve endured. It’s also possible for the hinge screws to fall out, which weakens the hinge. Once a hinge wears out, it’s time for a replacement so your gate doesn’t start sagging.

Assuming the site is prepped and you have all the tools and materials ready, you should budget the better part of a day to build a driveway gate. This can depend on your DIY experience and which materials you’ve chosen, such as building from scratch or using a prefabricated option. The gate size and finishing touches, like painting or staining, can also add to the overall time budget.
