In the end, we covered the loose gravel with a milling base, which looks better and sets me up to pave the driveway in a year or so, when it has appropriately settled. The work was delayed by weather, but was quickly rescheduled. They completely removed the original concrete driveway, installed a bed of stone, and a steel framework. The following day, they installed, graded (so water runs off to the street), and broom textured the driveway. They were respectful of the plants around the driveway.
