For almost two centuries, when Moses Clore began making furniture, the Clore family has been creating heirloom quality furniture. The E.A. Clore Sons' factory and showroom are located in Central Virginia, nestled in the beautiful Hebron Valley, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. We are about 2 hours from Washington, DC and an hour and a half from Richmond, Virginia. Each piece of Clore furniture is crafted to remain beautiful for years to come, employing traditional techniques such as mortise-and-tenon construction and dovetail joinery. Using kiln-dried hardwoods of cherry, walnut, mahogany and oak, our traditional styles are timeless, with something for almost every room in the home. Well-known for our sturdy and simple chairs, each with a seat of handwoven rush, they grace the dining rooms of many restaurants. We understand the occasional need for modifications and can provide a quote for custom work as well. Churches, schools and businesses may contact us concerning their special needs, as well. We are proud to also showcase upholstery from Norwalk Furniture of Ohio and mattresses from Tempur-Pedic and Custom Comfort by Winn. Gifts from Simon Pearce, Robert Abbey lighting, plus local original art round out our offerings to make your home a beautiful sanctuary.

Furniture Reupholstery questions, answered by experts

In most cases, it is more affordable to reupholster furniture than it is to replace it, but it depends on the quality and age of the furniture you’re considering getting reupholstered. Antique pieces are always worth reupholstering, as it’s the only way to preserve the piece and extend its life. Newer pieces of furniture are more often made using lower-quality materials like medium-density fiberboard or plywood that don’t have the same lifespan as things like hardwood. For newer pieces, your furniture reupholstery specialist should be able to help you determine the best course of action.

Furniture made from materials resistant to sun fading includes metals like aluminum, stainless steel, and wrought iron, as well as certain synthetic materials like polyethylene (commonly used in outdoor wicker furniture) and resin-based products. Glass tables and accents are also sun resistant. These materials inherently withstand UV rays and are less prone to fading or discoloration. Furniture with UV-resistant coatings or finishes, such as powder-coated metal or UV-protected plastics, offers enhanced protection against sun-induced fading.

Doing your own upholstery work is possible, but it’s typically a better idea to leave the work to professionals. Without experience and the proper tools, it’s difficult to get a professionally finished appearance for your furniture, and many DIYers end up spending money on tools and materials only to hire a professional when they can’t get the fabric to look right. If you have reupholstery experience, feel free to give it a shot. However, if you’re not confident in your skill level or you’re working with antiques, it’s worth the money to hire a pro.

If your usually super soft couch feels crusty and rough after cleaning, it could be that you haven’t removed the cleaning product properly, you used too much, or you applied the wrong type. Always check the couch tags to select the right cleaning product, read application instructions carefully, and test on an inconspicuous corner. For fabrics such as microfiber, you can soften and fluff crusty fibers using a soft-bristled brush.

It is usually worth repairing leather furniture, as it tends to retain its value, provided you care for the material. A typical repair for leather furniture will cost about $250, which is significantly more affordable than replacing the furniture entirely. Even if you spend toward the upper end of the typical cost range for a full reupholstering—around $4,000—you’ll still save money over replacing it. Of course, the quality of the leather and the piece of furniture matters. Consult a leather repair professional about whether it’s worth repairing your leather furniture.
