"I hired Mr. Sword to hang, tape and mud drywall in my unfinished basement. He was very professional, he did exactly what he said he would do and also did it when he said he would so there were no surprises. The quality of the work was excellent and he even cleaned up when he was done so I was able to begin painting the same day. I would recommend Mr. Sword to anyone and I will be calling on him again as projects arise that are too much for me to handle by myself."

"We recently moved into a split level home that apparently has trouble heating the side of the house opposite from where the furnace sits. Jim came in and did a walk-around, showing us the oversized pipe that was overheating the bathroom above the furnace, the leak on the furnace itself, and that the vent in our kitchen/dining room was not connected to the duct. Estimate was $80, not to be included in the cost of the work itself, but we felt confident that he knew what he was talking about. It took a few calls to get the work scheduled because the receptionist was not aware of what Jim had told us. He also had said that he would be able to get a drywall guy to come in and patch the holes, but we were never able to get it scheduled with him - again, partially due to the receptionist being unaware of what Jim had promised, and partially due to Jim not calling us back. We wound up calling our own guy. Two of Jim's crew came in to do the work. They seemed great while they were here, except that they left the door open when they went out to get their materials. (Our dog made a break for it, but luckily she knows where she gets food and love.) It took longer than they expected to do the work, but they stayed until it was done. They also found a problem with another vent and fixed it while they were in there, which we thought was great. Unfortunately, they took the drywall that they had cut out, so when our guy came in, he had to use his own pieces. On the vent where they found the new problem, they didn't make sure that it could open and close easily...now it is stuck going the wrong way, and it only seems to push out cold air. They also didn't clean up well after themselves; there was drywall dust all over the place. We got Jim back in for another look, which he didn't charge us for. When we showed him the vent that won't open well anymore, he just laughed and closed it. That certainly hasn't resolved the problem. He blocked part of the one of the returns so it doesn't steal the warm air from the living room, even though the vents are clear on the other side of the room; his only other suggestions were to put in more vents and close other vents. No discussion of fans to push the hot air from one room to the other. I'm not HVAC expert of course, but his solutions didn't seem to make any sense; and the work that we did pay him for hasn't made a lick of difference. We're moving on and won't be recommending Select. ** UPDATE: Jim called us in response to this report, very concerned about how we felt the service had gone. He said that he had expected to be able to continue investigating what needed to be fixed in the house and did not mean to leave us hanging. This is why he didn't fix the vent when he was here, because he expected to be back. He also talked through with us why he didn't think that fans would work. Additionally, he said that he would talk to the men who performed the work since we were unhappy with the mess, etc. While we were left feeling that there was some miscommunication, we do appreciate Jim's concern and would consider using Select in the future."

"It went pretty smoothly. One of the best contractors I have had from Choice Home Warranty. Century Restoration Maintenance, LLC and owner PeAyre Gardner were awesome. I have had CHW several years and I wanted to cancel because every thing we called about they denied the claim. My husband decided to keep them. I was pleasantly surprised that they fixed both the leak and drywall in the ceiling from the leak. I did have to provide extra pics from the leak before it was approved as initially the claim was denied."

"2 gentleman from Walls Construction and Handyman came out and cleaned gutters thoroughly. While there they did free roof inspection and found that 2 roof boots were cracked. They notified me and I told them to go ahead and repair them. They are one of the most outstanding companies I have ever had come out and do work on my house. Greg Maratto was very polite, experienced and just an over all joy. The office staff was also very polite and professional. I would definitely recommend using this company for any of your construction/handyman needs.

Drywall questions, answered by experts

Costs depend on labor, material quality, wall preparation, and finishing requirements.

Plaster is a pretty tough surface, but it can still sustain damage from things like bumping against it, water issues, dampness, extreme humidity changes, and plain old age. Most plaster walls last hundreds of years and will only be taken down to the base layer when major repairs are required. Being cautious around the wall, not placing furniture against it, and ensuring stable humidity are all great ways to reduce possible damage.

The age of your home can clue you in to whether you have plaster or drywall ceilings. Homes built after the ‘70s are more likely to have drywall ceilings and walls, while older homes have plaster. You can also do the pushpin test: A pushpin will go into drywall, whereas it’s much harder to push one into a plaster wall. If you’re still unsure, ask a drywall professional to let you know which type of ceilings and walls you have.

Regular dusting, occasional repainting, and avoiding harsh scrubbing preserve the finish.

The best tool for skim coating drywall is a skim coating blade, which can smooth out joint compound in wide stretches. While you could use a smaller drywall knife for skim coating, the smaller size means it’ll take longer to smooth out each section. Instead, consider investing in a skim coating blade for the quickest application.
