Small jobs welcome

"We couldn't finish scraping and evening out our stippled ceiling that was inherited from previous owners. We asked for an estimate, Isaias came at a time convenient for us (Saturday), gave a fair estimate. He came back with his team and worked on our stippled ceiling for 3 days. They taped off the area, they brought their own ladders, they unrolled a stepping mat from the door to the work area to prevent tracking dirt in and out. Each day they came on time, every time. The new ceiling looks great. Will definitely hire them again."

"I had to have my long driveway cleared from snow. James handled the job. Unlike other businesses in Charlottesville where it is hit and miss if they get back to you, James was in constant contact with me and followed up each of my calls and requests. He was thoroughly reliable, skilled, friendly, and patient. He did not leave the job until I was completely satisfied. He is a hard worker and I wish I could leave him 10 stars!"

"VA Dream Home Services has been an excellent vendor. They responded promptly to my request for a quote and immediately sent an appraisal team. My project was complicated by the fact that a ceiling needed to be removed, plumbing fixed and then the ceiling replaced. The team was very flexible in working around my plumber. Additionally, our home is older and has a textured ceiling throughout, which we wanted to maintain. VA Dream had no issues matching the repair to the rest of the house. They did such a good job, we immediately had them do a drywall replacement for a newly installed walk-in shower. Excellent work, done efficiently by nice people. Very happy."

Drywall questions, answered by experts

You can put drywall mud over paint to even out the surface or entirely resurface it. Sand the surface with 280-grit sandpaper, vacuum the debris and dust with a shop vac, and clean it with a slightly damp cloth. Allow the surface to dry. Apply drywall primer, especially if you’re skim-coating an entire wall. Apply the right type of drywall mud over the surface and smooth it with a trowel. Allow the layer to cure fully, then sand it before applying another layer or painting it.

If your premixed drywall mud is dried out or has begun to set in the bucket, you may be able to revive it by adding warm water and stirring. However, the first and most important step is to scrape off any hard, dried bits of drywall that may have accumulated toward the top of the container and throw them away because they will not easily reconstitute back into the drywall mud mix.

Knowing what causes drywall damage can help stop it before it starts. Here are some of the most common causes of drywall damage:

  • Water damage from roof leaks or leaky pipes.

  • Small holes caused by doorknobs, minor accidents, and rodent infestations.

  • Wall dents stemming from moving furniture and minor accidents.

  • Wall cracks that form from a settling foundation or seismic activity.

  • Nail pops from nails and screws in the walls.

  • Large holes that are caused by accidents with heavy objects, children and pets, or sporting equipment.

While fumigation chemicals cannot pass through solid objects, they will seep into any openings in walls, doors, or other closed spaces. This allows them to get into tight places where pests may be hiding and causing damage, like termites ruining the foundation of your home. It also means that your home needs to ventilate for 48 hours before returning to ensure that no harmful chemicals remain in your space.

All plaster walls will crack over time due to normal house settling and expansion and contraction from temperature and moisture changes. Small, thin hairline cracks are generally not serious and are mostly a cosmetic issue. However, larger or more significant cracks can indicate structural problems.

Here's how to tell the difference:

  • Cosmetic Cracks: Cracks that are 0.5 cm (0.2 inches) or thinner are typically cosmetic.

  • Structural Cracks: Cracks wider than 0.5 cm, excessive or deep cracks, multiple cracks in the same area, or cracks that span around corners can signify a structural or foundation issue. Cracks along the joints where walls meet the ceiling also warrant attention.

For cracks wider than 0.5 cm, structural repair is needed. If a crack is 2.5 cm (1 inch) or wider, or if you notice any signs of a structural problem, it is best to contact a plaster repair professional to assess the damage.
