"My husband and I were very pleased with the work that was done. We have received many compliments from our neighbors who either have already built a patio or are planning to have one built in their backyard.  The retaining wall and patio have  drawn the attention of passing cars stopping by to look at it.  We had considered 3 contractors from Angie's list with A ratings and we chose Worden Paving because we liked the owner Bill Worden's business manners during our first interview for an estimate.  Bill was very professional, knowledgeable, competent, and open to our comments, suggestions and lots of questions that he patiently answered regarding every detail we wanted to know about the work to be done.  Coming from a science and engineering background my husband and I wanted to make sure that the structures were free of defects, were sound, would not collapse years later and would have no drainage issues.  Since our property is in a community with an association, we had to request permission to have the patio and retaining wall constructed. This involved filling out a request describing the project with drawings and details on the types and colors of the stones that Bill helped us select.  He helped us fill out the request with all the information required and personally took it to the association management company to expedite the process. During the construction he was very mindful about not disturbing the surface of the lot not yet sold next to our house that was used for access to our backyard to bring and stage the materials.. At the end of the project the left over fill, gravel and grass sods were removed restoring the lot to its original condition and the silt skirt around the lot put back in place. He kept us informed on each step of the construction calling us to let us know when his crew would or would not be in for one reason or another. His crew was very professional and courteous. Bill  was also very open to changes we wanted to make from the original plan toward the end of the project such as adding 2 custom  made columns to the 2 entrances on the patio. A few days after the work was completed we noticed that the patio did not have enough polymeric sand in certain areas and we were concerned about water infiltration in these areas. Bill quickly responded to our concerns and personally came to add more sand to the patio,  leaving extra sand for us to use if we noticed any other gaps that. were not  filled. Overall Bill was a wonderful contractor, knowledgeable about his work, customer oriented and exceeded our expectations.  We highly recommend Worden Paving for your hardscaping and patio needs. We have already recommended it to our neighbors in our residential community.

Retaining Wall Installers questions, answered by experts

The lifespan of a retaining wall varies based on its material, installation quality, maintenance, and local climate, with an average range of 20 to 100 years. Retaining walls made from durable materials like concrete, stone, and brick generally last a minimum of 50 years. Concrete walls typically last between 50 and 100 years, while brick can last for over a century in ideal conditions. Timber retaining walls can last from 20 to 40 years, depending on the wood quality, and pressure-treated wood walls average around 30 years. It is important to note that a retaining wall can fail prematurely if it was poorly constructed, for example, with inefficient footings or without necessary rebar reinforcements.

To maintain the integrity of your landscape, a retaining wall must be installed if the slope of the angle exceeds 35 degrees. The lean of the wall must be 1 inch per 12 inches in height to disperse the weight of the soil uniformly and guarantee the correct drainage of the soil.

Depending on who you hire to build a retaining wall, the average cost, including demolition and reconstruction, for a 50-foot wall that's 4 feet in height is between $7,000 and $24,000.

A retaining wall can only function as a fence if it’s high enough on all sides to prevent someone from accidentally falling into the pool. However, most retaining walls retain dirt, which means their purpose is not related to safety. There would need to be nothing on the other side of the wall for it to be considered a fence, but in that case, it wouldn’t retain anything and would cease to be a retaining wall.

Generally speaking, a retaining wall should be between 3 and 4 feet high, depending on variables such as the wall-building material, the purpose of the retaining wall, and more. If you want your retaining wall to be taller than 4 feet, check with your local building ordinance office for the maximum allotment. You may also need a special permit for retaining walls over 4 feet tall.
