We have a very long driveway to the house and initially Bill was very punctual and responsive with an estimate. We had four estimates and his was the 2nd highest but liked the fact he was punctual and at the time did have good reviews. Initial estimate stated the project would take 5 days because of the length of the driveway. My neighbor works for DMV and had warned me that anyone can install an asphalt driveway that will last 5 years but the companies and people who know what they are doing and don't use cheap asphalt will last 15 to 20 years. The equipment arrived the night before work was to begin and talking to the guys they stated the work would be complete in 2 days. I emailed Bill that evening and he informed he that he had someone else helping him who had "bigger equipment" which would allow them to accomplish the job in 2 days. From his email in 2014 "There is a reason we win service awards from Angie's list and have a perfect record with the BBB. You are in good hands". Less than 5 years later the asphalt driveway is falling apart at the edges, has multiple large cracks. The driveway was sealed within 2 years after the initial installation by Bill because I had referred a neighbor (MISTAKE) at a discount. At the 3 year mark cracks and settling of the asphalt were noticeable and my wife reached out to Bill. After multiple calls he called back and apologized for not returning the phone calls because he had a sick family member in the hospital. However, he would be out to look at the driveway the next week. Never came. Called again and left message and never heard from him again. I guess anyone can pave a driveway that will last five years or less.

I contacted Mr. Worden because of his great rating and many reviews on Angie's List. When I initially spoke with him he seemed very knowledgeable and professional. We made an appointment on 5/15/2014 at noon for him to come out and assess the area to provide an estimate. On the day we were suppposed to meet he was running late but called to imform us he would be about 15 mins late which was fine. My husband met with him and really liked him. We were given several estimates but my husband chose Mr. Worden because he gave him a great impression. I received the written estimate of $4800 to my email that evening and let him know the next day I wanted him to do the work. We were unable to meet in person to sign the contract because I work nights and was doing a significant amount of OT that week. I provided payment via email and he told me he would get started the week after Memorial Day. He told us he would either be at the house on Wed 5/28 or Thurs 5/29. We didn't hear from him Wednesday and it was raining Thursday and he called mid morning to tell us he wouldn't be out till Monday because the ground was too saturated which we understood. On Monday 6/2 I expected them at the house in the morning to get started and work a full day. No one showed up. My husband called around 11am and Mr. Worden stated his driver had the flu. I was irritated that we had to contact him to find out where he was. On Tuesday, once again we did not hear from him. I called that afternoon to find out where he was and when to expect him there. He called me back and told me he was behind because of the rain. For me to have to call him to receive updates is unprofessional in my opinion. He finally came out around 2 pm 6/4 and excavated the area. On Thurs 6/5 the workers didn't show up till the afternoon to get started, worked a few hours and left. I've been renovating my home for over a year now, and I've never known anyone to come out and get started in the afternoon and work a few hours and leave. This really prolonged the completion of the job. Mr. Worden contacted me Thursday afternoon to tell me that he was concerned about the slope of the yard but ulimately he thought he would be able to build up the area with the dirt he excavated. He mentioned the option of having to build a wall but said he didn't think he would have to do that he was just letting me know his concerns. I told him I wanted it to be functional and he understood. He told me then that he would take $300 off of the price of the job if it wasn't completed by Sat. because he felt bad about the delay, but that were problems with the delivery of the brick. He redeemed himself at that point for me. On Saturday 6/7 someone worked on the patio for most of the day. After he left, my husband and I went to look at what had been done so far and the slope was unacceptable. There was no way it would function with a table and chairs out there. We called him and told him our issue and he sounded frustrated and tried to tell us he told us about the issue. Yes, he did tell us his concerns but he also told us he thought he could build it up with dirt. We did not hear from him Saturday, and his employee and not called to tell him any issues regarding the slope. We made an appointment for him to come out Mon. and he spoke with my husband and said he would have to dig it down further in order for it to be level, but if he did a step needed to be built, or he could build a retaining wall of some sort which would cost another $1500. We explained to him that we thought the point of the estimate was to assess the area and determine the work that needed to be done and if he would have given us a quote of 6,300 then we would not have hired him because it wasn't in our budget. He understood our frustration and we agreed to pay an additional $500 to built a stone step. My husband pulled up all the pavers himself because he felt bad that his employee had worked all day Saturday and had to start over. The next week and a half was a nightmare. We had no idea when the workers were coming, when they did come one of them had such a bad attitude, was cursing and carrying on outside. On 6/18 Mr. Worden called to say they were almost done and wanted payment. I wrote a check and went to look at the patio. Part of the patio didn't go all the way up to the steps like planned. When my husband went out there to confront the guy about it he saw him cursing and yelling so instead called Mr. Worden. Mr. Worden sounded very irritated and said "maybe it's because of the heat". My husband works outside everyday as well so we understand the weather takes a toll but cursing and yelling isn't acceptable. Mr. Worden said the stone follows the same line as originally planned but because of the step is why it looks like that which is not true because we didn't plan for the stone to go straight out from the steps. It had a slight curve to the design which would have been within our plan. When I spoke with the employee that did it, he gave a contradictory explanation that he was going to install it further but the stone would have to be underneath the level of ground for it to have proper runoff. This made more sense, so I asked them if I could have the leftover stone so we could do it ourselves since we had other plans for that area of the yard to include a fire pit and I took what I needed off of the truck. The guys were respectful to me when I was outside. The guy apologized for his behavior and said one of the other guys took the cement glue so he couldn't glue down the stone steps but promised to come back the next morning to finish up which he did. I have never been more happy to have a job finally completed. The job was mediocre. There were issues we found after they left that we weren't about to call them back about. My husband will fix it himself. They ran into our bay window with the bobcat apparenlty, because the siding is damaged. The stone step has stone installed properly to the railing one one side but a few inch gap on the other.  Mr. Worden did call to apologize to me for his employees behavior but it didn't seem sincere. We were made to feel that these issues were our fault and we were difficult clients.  We expected the job to be done right. I'm not sure what exactlty happened with this experience, because he seems to have a good reputation but our experience was awful. We planned to get him to do our driveway but we will be going with someone else.

Mr. Worden called before he came out to confirm he was available to come out that day.  He called again to say he was nearby and would arrive soon.  When he arrived, he was very professional and courteous, answering my questions without hesitation.  He then measured the driveway and left.  Later that evening I received a quote via email for 3 different services (grading/gravel, tar & chip, and paving).
Ultimately, we did not hire Mr. Worden because his price was not quite as competitive as another company.

Crew was professional, timely (the weather was the only thing that delayed the job, and nobody could control for that), and the work quality was excellent. Price was great. Bill was very responsive. I've reached out to him to scope and price another job for us.

I wasn't thrilled with the end result.  I think they laid the asphalt when it was too cool.  Granted my driveway is an unusual shape and more difficult to pave.  Mr. Worden was easy to work with.

June 2014 update:  Bill Worden provided a free seal coating on my driveway to compensate for the lackluster paving job.  The seal coat looks great, and I appreciate it.  Was a nice customer service gesture.  I would do business with them again.  Moral of the story is to lay asphalt during the warmer months, and hopefully they start paving in the morning while the asphalt is still hot.  If you are the second job of the day and they show up in the afternoon the asphalt may be cooler and may not go down as well.  Overall I had a good customer experience.

Called and left a voicemail message to schedule an estimate.  Did not receive a call back until over a week later.  Scheduled a time to meet for an estimate over the phone.  No one showed up at appointed time and I never got a phone call explaining why or that he would be late.  I took this as an indicator of how the job would probably go and hired someone else to do my paving work.

William (Bill)  Worden responded to my e-mail request for quote, and we arranged a meeting to discus the details, on August 7.  We had a contract on  August 9, and work began on August 15. bill's crew removed the 30-year accumulation of pea gravel and graded the clay base to accommodate the width, level, and drainage pitch that we had agreed.  They installed a layer of crusher run gravel and then a layer of stone dust in which to bed the pavers. There was a broad enough selection of paver 'colors' to meet our needs, with my wife choosing correctly, as always.
The work continued unless rained out.  We were able to park our three cars within the driveway every night, and the crew accommodated my wife's need to have a car brought to the garage even during working hours. There were a total of 10.5 working days, with the drive finished on August 28.
We are very pleased with the new driveway, and I would not hesitate to call Bill Worden again, and have already recommended him to friends.

I called Worden Paving on two seperate occassions asking to schedule an appointment to have someone come out and provide me a quote on paving a residential driveway. The first time I spoke with someone, I was told that the estimator didn't need to meet with me because he could come out and take the measurements for the driveway and leave a quote on the door. I told the man I spoke with that would be great and gave him my address. He said he would be out in the next few days to leave the quote as he was presently working paving jobs. A week passed and I never received a return phone call nor did he come by and take measurements in order to leave a quote on my door. Thinking that I was not taken seriously because I am a woman, I had my boyfriend call to request a quote for someone to come out to take measurements in order to provide a quote for a paved driveway. When my boyfriend called, he got the same result I did. He told the man who answered the phone that he would like to have an estimate for the installation of a residential driveway and gave him the address of my house. My boyfriend was told that someone would come out and take measurements and leave a quote on the front door. Again, several days went by and Worden Paving never left a quote. Obviously I have no idea why this happened twice. I would have appreciated being told that Worden Paving was too busy to provide a quote, instead of being told twice that someone would come out and take measurements and leave a quote when there was never any intention of doing so. I would not recommend this company as they have absolutely no follow-up or follow-through skills.

I contacted Worden about taking a look at my driveway, which needs some serious attention.  He offered to come immediately, but it was raining at my house, so we set it up for the next afternoon.  He did not come or call.  So I called back and left a message.  I never got a reply.
I am not sure of the exact date, but it was about 3-4 weeks ago from today, which is July 22.

"I regret the fact that due to a tremendous volume of calls this spring and early summer there are a few that may have fallen through the cracks. I make every effort to run down every call personally. But I also oversee the installation of all of the work personally. Sometimes there are not enough hours in the day to respond to every call promptly."

Called repeatedly for an estimate, got one voicemail about being too busy.

Amended comments due to response: fair enough I removed the last portion of my statement. How about giving me a quote and maybe I will become an "actual" customer and change the rating all together?

"I do admit to exchanging voicemails with (removed member name). I am not sure about the "called repeatedly" portion of his comments. After 20 years of top quality service to the Richmond area which has earned me An A+ rating with local business rating agencies and winning service awards from Angies List Customers; I think our reputation proves that we don't go "MIA" on our customers. Please read the reviews of actual customers then weigh those against (removed member name) "probabilities""

"(removed member name) I do apologize that due to the extremely high volume of calls/emails we received during the early summer that yours may have been missed. We do make every effort to respond to every request for an estimate. This has been an extremely busy season for us and running the estimates takes us from New Kent to Goochland, from Prince George to Ashland and sometimes the volume of requests for estimates exceeds our capacity to service each one. Please accept my apology. Bill Worden"

He was pretty straightforward. He came and did his measurements as we appointed. He actually came and did the measurements about year and a half ago. We had a major complication in the household and we had to hold off. When I contacted him back, he remembered me. I told him I'l like to have him re-check and give me a secondary price because things change. He cam out and I wasn't here. He re-checked everything and emailed me an updated pricing. He had made a mistake on the measurement against what we were originally talking about and gave me too low of a price. When he came back out to finalize the deal and sign the contract, he was right upfront and made sure that I understood that he had made a mistake. He said basically he would be doing it for free because of the amount that was missed. We negotiated and came up with a mutual agreement. He was very fair. I tried to be fair. We got everything worked out. We basically got set up for a date to get it done. Unfortunately, with asphalt, if it's raining, you can't asphalt because you don't want to tear up somebody's driveway when it's raining. So we had to go through a couple of weeks where we had to play the roulette game with the weather. His crew came in when the weather broke and got it all done. It was very clean. He did exactly what he said he was going to do. It was finalized and when he left, everything was clean and done. The only thing left here was asphalt. It was like he was never here. His payment thing was so much up front, so much in the middle, and so much at the end. He held to those same gameplans. All the money was handled properly. I plan on, in the next 24 months, moving to a new home. If and when I do, if I have to get asphalt, I will call him first before anybody else. He handled me the same way he has handled all his other customers, as I saw in my research.

I had an appointment with Bill Worden to review the work and he did not show up, nor did he call to let me know he was not going to show up. So I waited and waited until I decided to have my secretary call him but he did not answer. He did however call back later with the typical cell phone died over the weekend (our appointment was on a Tuesday) and loss contact information excuse. It
would appear that he only keeps records on his cell phone and does not keep a log, records, notes or a computer schedule of appointments in case something like this happens. Something to consider when chosing a contractor.

Response from

"Dear [member name removed] I did miss our appointment and as soon as you contacted me I explained why. I didn't tell you that the battery died on my cell phone, I told you that it had gotten busted over the weekend and had to be replaced, therefore I had no access to my calendar. I apologize for any inconvenience."

Bill explained the job from start to finish, and we made some changes during the project. The additional expense for the change was reasonable and in line with his original bid which was lower than 3 other contractors. We had some weather affect the completion of the job, but when it was clear and warm enough they were on the project. There was a challenging angle that some steps met our paved driveway, and they matched that angle perfectly.
Very pleased with the project and highly recommend them for anyone having patio/driveway work done.
