"This guy is a pro! Absolutely! He expanded my existing driveway about 4 years (gravel base, asphalt, rolling), patched cracks, and sealed everything. I was impressed! He had left his business card and I called him again last month (4 years after the first seal job) and again he impressed the heck out of me. His price was good. Good personality. Easy to work with. Plus, he is local and has many years of experience. Our driveway is big. It had numerous small age-related problems: cracks from tree roots & settling, alligatoring, small holes. Ryan took care of it all, very thoroughly. First he string-trims all the edges to remove any over-growing grass. Then he power blows everything clean. He has a thick liquid filler (big 5 gallon buckets of it) that he pours into the alligatored areas. Then he has a special hot-melt rubber machine that he uses to fill all the other cracks. Finally he does the actual sealing. A nice heavy heated spray-on application. 100% recommendation!"

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

Many asphalt companies have experience with tar and chip paving, but not all. The process is unique enough—and not incredibly common enough—that you may have to look around for a tar and chip specialist. However, speaking with a driveway company is a great place to start, especially if they have experience with multiple materials.

Common alternatives to a gravel driveway include concrete, asphalt, brick, stone pavers, and permeable pavers. Concrete and asphalt are generally the most affordable options. However, concrete can be prone to cracking in cold climates, while asphalt may soften in areas with high heat and direct sun exposure. For enhanced curb appeal, brick, stone, and permeable pavers are popular choices, though their installation can be more expensive due to intricate designs. Stone pavers offer a natural look and are sometimes installed with gravel around them. Both permeable pavers and brick driveways provide excellent drainage, which helps prevent flooding and reduce water runoff.

Sometimes, when people talk about asphalt driveways, they’re actually referring to asphalt concrete, which is a completely different compound. Asphalt concrete is asphaltic cement combined with sand or grit. It is significantly more lasting and durable than regular asphalt but also much more expensive. If you’re considering using asphalt concrete, ask an asphalt company for their expert opinions.

Asphalt is not a type of concrete. While both are a common type of pavement, asphalt is composed of aggregates (like sand and gravel) and bitumen; concrete is a mixture of cement, aggregates, and water. Here are some of the key differences between asphalt and concrete driveways.

Recycled asphalt is not better than gravel, but can be a good alternative. It is inexpensive, but not as low-cost as gravel, and doesn’t tend to last as long. Recycled asphalt isn’t as dusty as gravel and is more environmentally friendly. The black look can be something that homeowners prefer. No matter what, ensure you choose an experienced recycled asphalt contractor.
