Customers say: Quick response

"Ross did a great job! Fast communication, excellent explanation of what he could do and why he was charging what he did. Two storm doors and handles installed in just a few hours! He also took the time to call the store for a better door price than what was listed on the website! Highly recommend!"

"KM and TM Construction did a great job rescreening my porch and added a handrail for the steps. They used as much of the existing frame as possible which saved on costs. The crew was on time, courteous, and cleaned up well. The job was completed earlier than anticipated."

"Wade was excellent in his customer service especially his patience and willing to listen to my specific needs and kept me informed everyday. He replaced the stripping around my garage and replaced a stand alone door. He also powerwashed, replaced wood planks, and spray painted my deck. He repaired holes in my vinyl siding, power wash the whole house. I am very pleased with his work and would hire him again without hesitation."

"Very well! They were very responsive and offered to send a person out the same day but due to the amount of work thought it might be better to start it first thing the next morning. The gentleman they sent was very professional and did an excellent job of installing the new door."

Doors questions, answered by experts

You should generally cut between 1/8-inch and 1 inch when planing a door. If you cut off more than that, you risk damaging the door. Planing too much from the bottom of your door can cause noticeable gaps, so it’s always better to start with as thin of a section as possible and work in thin layers until your door no longer sticks.

There are a few different reasons why shotgun houses have two separate front doors. Shotgun homes with two front doors are also called double shotgun homes, which can be two individual homes that share a wall. Other reasons include improved ventilation throughout the home and better access to other rooms.

Using force to open a door is not recommended, as this could cause serious injury or permanent damage to your door and surrounding door frame. If it’s a front door that you’ve lost the keys for, it’s better to call a locksmith. If it’s an interior door without any lock that you plan on keeping, a handyman can help. Finally, if it’s an old door that you plan to replace anyway, a professional door installer can remove the stuck door and source a replacement.

The lifespan of your door depends on the door type, its wear and tear, and the weather conditions in your area. For instance, front doors last between 20 and 60 years, depending on the material. Garage doors, on the other hand, last between 15 and 30 years. Interior doors don’t get hit with the elements and can last between 20 and 50 years, if not more.

The width of your door jamb should match your wall thickness exactly, so it depends on your wall. For standard door openings, the width is equal to the width of a 2-by-4-inch  stud, plus the width of the drywall on both sides—about 1/2 inch each—which comes out to 4 9/16 inches. Block walls and framed walls that use 2-by-6-inch framing require a door jamb that’s 6 9/16 inches. You should always measure your finished wall thickness to get an accurate width for your door jamb material.
