"Trent and his crew were all very professional and did an amazing job. Our addition had been started by another contractor several years ago but never completed. Trent made sure everything was properly done and if it wasn't his crews fixed what needed to be fixed until it was done right. After correcting the things that needed fixing they laid all the flooring, tiled the shower, finished the plumbing, HVAC, and wiring, put in the fixtures, painted, built a deck and enlarged our driveway , put in new gutters and gutter guards and some other stuff. The work is too notch and we wholeheartedly recommend them. Their customer service was also great. We have already hired them to do some painting, carpeting and repair work in the main house part of it to start in the fall and the rest early next year per our time frame on when we want the work done. Definitely a great company to work with and highly recommend."

"Repairs to my existing deck. New floor, and railing tops. Two joints where the railings met were not cut correctly and he put caulking which shrunk within a week leaving gaps. The small gate he said he could make does not quite fit and workmanship was not the best. And overpriced."

"We originally hired a different company who caused damage to my house and none of their work passed inspection. Virginia Home Renovations not only fixed the extensive damage caused by the first company but did an amazing job finishing the renovations we wanted in the first place! I'm soooooo happy with my home now!"

"Phoenix and their team did a great job on my deck. They did the permits that were needed, and worked with us on the design we wanted for the deck. They were patient and caring to listen and understand our needs. The deck was going to be used by our kids a lot, so they also made sure kid?s safety was addressed in smaller details. We enjoyed working with Phoenix construction team and would definitely hire and refer them."

"The customer service was amazing from the girl, Kelly who answered the phone and scheduled them to come out all the way to the maintenance person there. I appreciated their work and they fixed it fast.

"We have used Good Neighbor Fence twice now for two different homes. Our first job has held up great and weathered nicely (almost 7 years now). The second job (3 years old) took a beating in the heat---but we called Good Neighbor and they were willing to fix the areas that needed repairs at no cost. This was super impressive to us as a good amount of time had gone by already. Definitely personable sales team. It is rare to find a company that goes out of the way to help customers out these days (especially old customers)! Recommend for quality, speediness and customer service."

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

It is recommended to clean your deck once or twice a year to prevent the accumulation of dirt, debris, mold, and mildew. The ideal times for cleaning are in the spring and fall. A spring cleaning removes grime that has built up over the winter, preparing your deck for summer use. A fall cleaning washes away messes from summer activities, preventing them from setting into the wood over the winter. The exact frequency can depend on factors such as how often the deck is used, its exposure to pollen, and whether salt was used on it during the winter. Regular cleaning helps protect the wood and its finish from damage.

Before installing a new railing, check the condition of the deck frame and joists, especially around the perimeter where posts attach. If boards are loose, soft, or show signs of rot, the structure may need repair. A deck pro can inspect your framing to confirm it meets load-bearing requirements.

Footings for ground-level decks need to be at least 12 inches deep, and some areas require them to be even deeper. A standard range for deck footings is anywhere from 12 to 48 inches. The minimum footing depth is determined by an area’s frost line and soil conditions. If you’re unsure how deep to install deck footings, check local building codes to find the minimum footing depth in your area.

Rot loves moisture, so deck rot typically impacts the parts of a board that stay wet. This includes the underside of boards, in addition to support posts and joists. However, any part of a board can rot, given the right conditions.

As with patios, there are many types of deck choices to choose from to add personalization to your home. Some common deck options include:

  • Attached decks are anchored to the home and include simple ground-level options or multi-level structures with stairways and separate landings.

  • Detached island decks are not attached to the home; they’re a freestanding structure in the yard.

  • Wraparound decks connect the back of the house with at least one other side and often are built with railings for safety.

  • Multi-level decks connect your deck through varying levels of elevation, featuring landings that are attached to stairs.
