This company is totally dishonest, and they refuse to respond to my calls and e-mails regarding the items they left unfinished on the job, or issues that arose a mere six months after completion of work. For example, they left cable wires coming out of our wall with a hole; the shoe molding is coming off the wall; the grout in the shower was already cracking; the ceiling where the new plumbing went in was leaking and now there is a big water stain. Not only was the project manager during the work dishonest- he would continually mislead us on timing, or blatantly tell us what we wanted to hear, despite it being a lie. Furthermore, when talking to the sub contractors who did the actual work, they were so unhappy with Shamrock, and they were paid literally nothing, while also being fed lies by the company. Thus, we are going directly to them to do future work. After calling several times to complain last year, they sent someone out, as the project manager for our job had left the company. The new person was supposed to be "extremely professional." However, when he met with my husband, he tried to tell us that it wasn't their fault- that the leak, for example, had nothing to do with their work. Nevermind the fact the leak was in the ceiling, which had been totally removed and re-built, along with the new plumbing for the new toilet. He implied that he could come back to fix the other, smaller items, but alas, he never followed up. Thus, I have been calling for the past week to get these items fixed. Kim, the office manager said someone would be in touch, and on multiple occasions throughout the week told me someone would contact me by COB. And, of course, nothing. No word, no emails, no calls. I even sent her the pictures of what needed to be fixed. We have cables coming out of a hole in a wall that is in the bedroom of our soon-to-be nursery. But, I cannot even get an honest response, or any response for that matter. I plan to file complaints about this company where I can- starting with the Better Business Bureau. I cannot figure out how these people think this is how one runs a business.

My husband calls me "the Inspector" because I seriously look at everything from every angle and find any little fault. I continuously have a TON of questions about projects basically from begining to end. If you aren't into reading long reviews, the short version of this is that, being as picky as I am, I would definitely use Jeff and Custom Stonescaping again for any outdoor projects we do. We had already had a few contractors come by prior to Custom Stonescaping. For different reasons, I wasn't overly excited to use any of them for our project. Either cost, style, or responsiveness was an issue. Somehow when we initially made our list of contractors, we had not seen CSS and their great reviews. Thankfully, my husband saw the Angie's reviews and said "let's have them take a look." Immediately after contacting Custom Stonescaping, for an estimate, Jeff was able to meet with us. There was no 2 week wait. He basically said "tell me what works for you and I'll be there." He showed up right on time and full of energy. He took the time to go over the various plans we had come up with based on other contractors and said he'd get back to us with his idea and a price. He came back the next day with an estimate and sketch of ideas for the patio and landscaping! Considering most contractors we spoke with took a couple of weeks to be able to come by, then a few more to come up with a rough idea of a plan, this was amazing! The price was competitive and Jeff worked with us to find an agreeable price for the project. As we went through the process, some things changed. We added in a large mulch area with flagstone steppers and what initially was going to be a small, decorative wall turned into more of a stone retaining wall. He was fair on the cost and was able to incorporated the additional work in during the project. Due to time constraints with us being gone for over a week right after the work was supposed to be complete, Jeff was willing to break the project into to separate components. The walkway/patio/stone walls all were done during the first couple of days. A few weeks later, the remainder of the landscaping and sod went in. Things did keep getting pushed back secondary to weather which was a little frustrating, but Jeff kept us informed and worked with me on a day that I could be here to help oversee the project. I had a very challenging time determining exactly what I wanted as far as plants and landscaping. At the beginning of this process, I had no knowledge of plants at all. I spent probably 200 hours over several months on line and in nurseries trying to gather as much information as I could. Initially, I thought we could just hire someone to come in, explain what our goals were, and they'd do it all. At the end of the day, it just wasn't that simple. We talked with several landscape contractors and were given several plans. Each time, as I'd go through and try to learn about each of the recommended plants, something didn't work. It was a shady spot and a plant that needed sun. Or an area of the yard that stays fairly wet and a plant that was sensitive to root rot. We needed a 50 foot privacy area in the back of the yard, but I needed to try to get coverage with something that we could keep to a 4 foot or so depth due to a future swing set. I can't say that Jeff suddenly came up with "the plan" that made it all work. However, he had some very good suggestions and basically tolerated my 100 emails as I tried to come up with THE PLAN that would work on my own. It's a little problematic when you have an idea of what you ultimately are trying to accomplish, but don't know enough to know what works and doesn't work. Every time I'd come up with a new idea on plants, spacing, etc and asked Jeff his thoughts, he got back to me. I'm sure it was annoying to have such an overly detailed, picky client, but he still was always responsive. Honestly, we were talking fairly seriously with another contractor before finding Jeff, and I think I had so many questions he just stopped responding. If any other customers are like me, I'm sure that contractors get completely bogged down with questions and emails Jeff always got back to me within the day or so and answered my questions. This was HUGE for me. I know I have A LOT of questions, but I also feel like I'm spending a TON of money, so I'm allowed to ask whatever I need to ask. The last thing I want is to spend a bunch of money and wish I had done something different. The crews were awesome that did the work. Jeff came by at the beginning of each day to review things with us and the crew and then would stop by to see how things were going. There was always an english speaking foreman (which with all of my questions and need to have things look a certain way, was extremely important to me). They worked hard all day, each day. They knocked on the door and asked when they had a question or wanted to clarify something. At the end of each day, the yard was cleaned and there was no debris or anything left sitting out. Given that I wanted things done in a very specific way - specific measurements and design for the patio, specific measurements for the planting beds, specific spacing for the plants - I was very happy that I was able to be home for nearly all of the project. While we did spray paint areas, the paint wasn't really visible after the prep work and had I not been here, I'm not sure if things would have been exactly as I wanted. I'm sure they would have been very nice and still been the same general idea, but if you want things done in an exact manner, I would recommend being available during the key parts of the project. The crews were great and very responsive through the days when I had questions and worked with me to make the project go as I hoped. After agreeing on final planting plan, I wanted to make sure that we got a low growing Japanese maple and not a more upright "lollipop" one. Jeff suggested I go to the nursery that supplies the plants for them and tag the maple and any specific plants that I wanted. I had the list we had agreed on and someone at the nursery was kind enough to help me navigate the nursery and she tagged plants for me. While this is not usually how it's done, it was helpful for me to insure that I was able to get the maple that I wanted. It probably wasn't as important with the rest of the plants (a laurel is a laurel is a laurel) but for me, it helped to see what I was getting before everything arrived. The plants have been in the ground for only a couple of weeks. Right now, everything seems ok, but I feel like it's too soon to tell. I'm a little nervous about how cold it got so soon after planting, but hopefully everything will survive the winter and be amazing in the spring. I have read reviews regarding other contractors and plant nightmares from having plants planted improperly. Hopefully, we don't have any issues and with some good water and TLC, all of our plants will thrive! Jeff did agree to warranty the plants, which is not done routinely by many places other than the nurseries.
Overall, I'm extremely happy and would use Custom Stonescaping again for any work. I love our yard now and can't wait for sping to get her to enjoy it! They also have been unreliable as to the day they show up. If you cancel a cut, their IT system completely takes your name out from that day forward, requiring you to call to schedule a cut and get you back into the cue again. We walked through the basement underneath the first-floor half bath and looked at the plumbing situation (as well as some potential brick work in the basement itself). Then on to the upstairs existing full bath, and then the potential new full master bath. He provided rough cost ideas for what we wanted to do. Merrick Design has a great process where you do this step, then meet with a professional designer and have plans drawn up. At that point, Merrick works to get exact costs from subcontractors as the process moves forward. Very well thought out process. Several of the houses in our neighborhood have used Merrick Design and been very happy with their work. Jeff was just great to work with - very collaborative - he'd work with our ideas and add his own suggestions, most of which were spot-on. He patiently developed and re-developed the plan as we made changes large and small right up to the last minute. The service Jeff provides is very individual. When Jeff was at the nursery and saw a plant he thought we'd like, he'd take a picture and email it to us to get our reaction. And the work he and his crew did was terrific. They cleaned up at the end of every day (5 day project), even though we had daily torrential rains and plenty of mud, the worksite was always left spotless. After a walkway and the patio were basically completed, they happily re-cut stone to change the shape of the walkway and smooth the outer edges of the patio the way we wanted it. Nothing was too much trouble (at least not so that they'd let on). The stone work and plantings are absolutely beautiful. We had a party with over 60 people only 24 hours after Jeff and his crew had completed their work and no one could guess that the yard was so new. They all thought it looked so organic - as though it had been there for years. Jeff has a great eye for design as well as function and he and his crew are professional in every way. And his prices were both competitive and fair. FAQs for greenhouse and nursery service projects in Falls Church, VA
Buying plants from a nursery is one thing, but ensuring that they are properly planted is another. While you might not need to hire a landscaper for every plant that you buy from a nursery, it’s a great idea to have their expertise and experience to plant larger items, like burlapped trees or specialty plants like rose bushes. Even better, before making a trip to a nursery to buy new plants, consult a local landscaper to test your soil for pH levels, soil texture, and phosphorus and potassium levels to help determine the best plants for your area.
Garden nurseries offer many plants to make your home and garden flourish. In-container plants are one option, including perennials, annuals, and small shrubs or trees. Large hedge plants and roses are called bare-root plants, meaning they have not been potted. Finally, you will see some burlapped plants, typically larger trees and shrubs with burlap wrapping around the bottom.
The best time to plant is between spring and autumn. Springtime weather is typically mild and is when nurseries start to bloom. When the summer weather arrives and it’s hot out, it’s best to avoid planting bare-root plants, but you can still plant many in-container varieties. The first sign of fall is another great opportunity to plant biennials if you live in southern states, or a lovely vegetable garden up north.
If you’re hiring a landscaper to plant the garden of your dreams, you do not need to provide them with plants that you bought yourself from a nursery. While you certainly can provide your landscaper with plants, keep in mind that some nurseries provide discounts to landscaping companies, therefore potentially lowering your materials cost. Beyond the cost of the plants themselves, you need to have additional materials like topsoil and mulch for the project. Most likely, your landscaper can get a discount on these materials as well, so it’s worth speaking with them before making any large purchases.
While there are over 400,000 different flowering plants worldwide, there are five main types of flowers. These flower types are based on their lifecycles, giving each type a unique personality. These types are:
Annuals, which complete their entire life cycle within a single growing season.
Perennials, which the tops die off in the winter but regrow in spring.
Biennials, which complete their entire life cycle within two years.
Hybrids, which exhibit either annual or perennial behaviors depending on location
Flowering shrubs, which are small to medium-sized perennial woody plants, such as shrubs or evergreens.
