"Excellent work from Rick and his team. From initial contact all the way to job completion was stellar. I requested to have Rick and his crew clear, grade and spread topsoil in order to extend my backyard and remove the huge burm left behind from the initial construction of my home in 2014. Rick was able to complete the job in less than 2 days. Now we have a backyard we’ve always wanted. I would definitely recommend Rick for any clearing and excavation projects and will be using the company for future projects. Thanks Rick and Team!"

"We hired JM Concrete to remove an old broken sidewalk and pour a new one for the entrance to our home. They did a wonderful job. They are easy to get in touch with and good at returning phone calls. They gave us an excellent price on the job. They were professional, courteous, and worked hard. We are very pleased with the finished product. I would definitely recommend this company."

"Friendly, professional, knowledgeable, and very informative. John explained the excavation and power rake process step by step and even explained the process and specifications of concrete contractor requirements after his completion. Really enjoyed having John and Amber as my excavator. I would highly recommend this John Kahl and Amber, BossHogg Industries."

"Justin came to my home and gave me an estimate for my very long (1/3 mile) driveway. Three days later the job was complete! 100 tons of #57 gravel delivered and spread in one day. Wonderful job! The equipment they own is first rate. The crew is the best. Very professional, polite, accommodating and most of all, they know how to do the job. You will not be disappointed if you hire Justin and his crew. I am sure they will exceed your expectations."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

The rules for trenching and excavation include setting up and following safety protocols, learning how to use tools and machines properly, and ensuring there is a safe exit for all workers. Keep heavy equipment and materials away from the edge of the hole or trench. Call the 811 dig line before starting any excavation or trenching project to ensure you don’t hit any electrical or gas lines.

Trenches are typically 12 to 24 inches deep and 8 inches wide. However, the required depth depends on the specific project and local ordinances. For example, a French drain may need to be 18 inches deep, while a water pipe might require a depth of 24 inches and a drainage pipe 36 inches. Your city or county may have specific regulations, so it's wise to consult with an excavation professional to determine the correct depth for your project.

Yes, an excavation company is the best option for land grading and yard leveling. General landscapers might be able to tackle these projects, but an excavation company will do a better job because they’re used to operating the necessary heavy machinery. Landscapers might opt to do the work manually, which takes much longer and could cost you more in labor fees. Finally, excavation companies will understand local regulations and know when you need permits to legalize the work, while a landscaper might not.

Trenching and boring are two distinct methods for installing underground utilities. Trenching involves digging a channel using equipment like an excavator, trencher, backhoe, or shovel. While it is a simpler process, it causes significant disruption to the surface, landscaping, and surrounding ecosystems.

Boring, also known as directional boring, is a less invasive alternative that uses a drill to create a tunnel for utility lines without disturbing the surface. This method is more precise and is ideal for installations that need to go underneath buildings, roads, or bodies of water. Although boring is less disruptive, it is generally more expensive than trenching.

There are several methods to hollow out a tree stump, and the best one depends on your tools, experience, and priorities. Common methods include using a chisel and hammer, a chainsaw, or burning.

  • Chisel and Hammer: This is often considered the easiest approach for those with limited tools or experience, though it is the most time-consuming.

  • Chainsaw: Using a chainsaw is the fastest method, but it comes with significant safety risks, especially for inexperienced users.

  • Burning: This can be an effective method, but it is not recommended unless you can first drill holes into the stump. Without holes, the stump will be difficult to light and may not burn completely through.

A power drill with at least a ⅜-inch diameter bit can make the job quicker and easier, regardless of the primary method. While you can use a chisel or chainsaw without a drill, it will require more time and effort. Always wear protective goggles and thick gloves, as splinters are an inevitable risk.
