"It is with deep satisfaction that I recommend Grady?s Painting and Plastering & Construction. Mr. George Grady is a skilled craftsman. He was hired to correct long neglected and extensive masonry and window issues on a large, beautiful Presbyterian Church built in the Civil War era in Philadelphia. The property was neglected with only minimal maintenance performed over the last 40+ years. The building was in severe decline and in need of stabilization and restoration on many fronts. Cracked ledge plates were chipped out and reestablished, internal walls damaged by leakage were broken out and repaired, brickwork was repointed and in severe cases reestablished to original strength and beauty. Leaks around the base of the building were addressed to stabilize deterioration of the foundation. Large rotted window sills under beautiful stained glass windows were restored after significant masonry reestablishment due to water damage under the rotted out sills. Broken and missing stained glass windows are in the process of repair and replacement. The process started with new metal frames cast by Mr. Grady. The new frames will hold clear painted replications of the original stained glass, also crafted by Mr. Grady. Regular windows all around the church and manse were also repaired and restored. Roof leaks were accurately identified and repaired. A sagging plaster ceiling has been torn out and restored. All this work was done by Mr. Grady alone or with an occasional helper. He worked with care, expertise and respect for the original structure. The results far exceeded our expectations and have injected new life into a building on the brink. This building, owned by the Presbytery of Philadelphia, now houses a new urban ministry in a newly gentrifying area of the city. We are happy to have had the good fortune to be connected to Grady's Painting and Plastering & Construction"

"The windows were manufactured earlier than we expected and we were promptly contacted about installation. Although we were told the installation was scheduled for two days, the four man crew that arrived was able to finish in a single day! Each window was installed with the same consistency in quality and efficiency. Furthermore, the crew did an excellent job protecting our floors and furnishings in every room. When it comes to evaluating the installation crew, we couldn't be happier. Regarding price, we probably paid more than we should, but that's on us. We advise getting several other quotes first and then get Castle's quote. This will definitely help in your negotiating. The windows have definitely helped to eliminate draftiness in our home and helped to maintain a consistent temperature."

"I called Competitive Painters because they identified custom cabinet refinishing among their skills.  Several companies had terminated discussions when they learned that the cabinets were in the master bathroom.  Robert Coulter was not put off by that.  He first came to our house to initiate an estimate on 5/6.  He reviewed the water overflow damage to the cabinets and  took pictures.  He also suggested other related work his firm could do in the bathroom to restore the look we wanted. I told him that since I had to replace the toilet in the master bath, I was planning on replacing all 3 in the house with low water flow units.  He gave me some good advice on purchasing them and suggested that his firm could install them.  We like a clean modern look. and we could see that Robert understood what we wanted for the bathroom.  He came back later in the month with a refacing plan that used wood rather than MDF on the faces, matched the paint and utilized the same hinges and hardware preserving the look of the bath.  He and his crew were polite, punctual, friendly and efficient and cleaned up after themselves very well. Robert  continued to make helpful suggestions throughout the process.
They installed  two of the new low flow toilets in June but due to the floor scheduling the third had to wait until the first week in July.  Robert was very patient about the delay.
Since flooring work was already planned [and turned out to be more complex than anticipated ]  Robert and his crew were very good about scheduling around the floor work and our needed travel in June.  The refacing was beautiful and much more compatible with the bath environment than the previous faces. My wife and  I believe it will last much longer now."

"Mega Kitchen and Bath remodeled our bathroom and we couldn?t be happier to have worked with them. Throughout the whole process, from picking out finishes with Ibrahim to demolition and installations, the amount of detail and time put into our project was excellent. The managers and workers were on the job site every day to make sure all details were taken care of. The time line given was followed as promised and they finished the work on time. We are very pleased with the final result and are looking forward to work with them again soon.

"Wilson and his crew are amazing! They fixed an armoire door (antique French, so no hinges) when no one else was able to do so, and restored its veneer and cleaned the glass on the doors which had 200 years of mineral deposits. Next, they reupholstered a barrel chair, doing a beautiful job; it looks better than when I first bought it. Wilson has over 40 years of restoration experience with the Catholic Church in Italy and Ecuador, and it shows. He is also very personable and diligent when informing his customers of their job status. I highly recommend d them."

"George's Paining, Inc. sent 3 workers and they arrived 15 minutes early.  I saw them out the window but they did not come in until 7am when they were suppose to.  That was nice.  They immediately layed down covering for the floor and then started to work.  The wall paper removal would have taken me weeks but they got it all done in half a day and then they painted the walls and stairway and ceiling. The entire job took 8 hours.  Everyone was very polite and they cleaned up everything.  You would never know they entered your house with paint.  It was spotless. I would recommend them to anyone.

"I am an older female who hired Paintings by Rick to replace rotted wood trim, then paint the trim, shutters, and the EIFS siding on our home.  Also, the owner of the adjoining home lives out of state and asked for my help to find a contractor for similar work on his home.  Paintings by Rick had glowing reviews on Angie's List and his estimate was very good so he was hired to work on both homes.  First, I have to say that the painting crew was always respectful and pleasant to interact with but I felt they could have benefited from an occasional visit from Rick to be sure things were being done correctly.  Also, Rick became less receptive to concerns or complaints when issues came up.  Years of customer service experience has taught me that just saying "I'm sorry" or "I will look into the issue" goes a long way for customer relations.  Generally this was not the response I received.
Work began initially on the neighbor's home on a Friday.  When the crew wrapped up for the weekend they left a large pile of rotted trim with nails protruding on the lawn (spilling into another neighbor's lawn), they left the wood fascia board off the entire length of the home leaving areas of open access to the attic, and rather than lay the vinyl shutters flat on the ground they were leaned against the chimney and had acquired quite a bend in the stack after leaning in that position.  I emailed Rick on the weekend pointing out these issues to him and asked that this not happen when work began on our home.  Instead of acknowledging these were issues he tried to justify them.  His crew did not repeat these practices when working on our home but this was the beginning of several disappointing interactions with Rick.  As work progressed and other issues came up on our homes, the relationship with Rick became poorer.
In the end I do believe that the workers did a good job but communications was always very poor on when to expect workers and the job was approached in a very disorganized way so it was never clear where they were in the process.    I never knew when I would have to be home to have windows and doors open until they arrived in the morning.  In the end the work stretched over several weeks for a modest sized home.  Our past experience has been that this work was completed much more quickly with a smaller crew.
Sadly, I have to say I would not recommend Painting by Rick to others.  Even the person renting the adjoining home has asked where I am posting my comments because he had several serious issues when the work was being done on that home and he wants to share his negative experience.  I think in the end the price was good and the work appears to be good but there were just too many hassles reaching completion.

Window Shutters questions, answered by experts

Shutters are still very common in Southern, farmhouse, and traditional-style homes, especially those in warm climates who can benefit from the increased efficiency. While modern homes and designs tend to shy away from shutters, shutters are a timeless design style that will likely be around for decades to come.

Not all windows are suitable for shutters, as certain styles can prevent them from functioning correctly. It's best to avoid installing shutters on bay windows, picture windows, dormer windows, and double-mulled windows. Shutters are better suited for large, full-size standard windows or French doors.

Additionally, consider the room's lighting needs. Since shutters effectively block light, they are an excellent choice for rooms where you want more darkness and privacy, such as a master bedroom or a main living room. For window types that are not ideal for functional shutters, some homeowners choose to install fixed (non-functional) shutters to maintain a consistent look across the home.

The average shutter is designed to last 20 to 25 years. Proper maintenance for the type of shutters you have is essential for helping them reach their full potential.

Estate shutters offer more energy efficiency, privacy, and light control than blinds. They provide better insulation against heat and cold, lowering your energy bills. They’re also sturdy, durable, and last much longer than blinds (up to 50 years or longer). They’re also low-maintenance and can add curb appeal to your home. The return on investment (ROI) for estate shutters is around 75%.

Plantation shutters cost an average of $2,990, making them one of the pricier shutter options. However, they offer a 75% return on your investment and are great options for boosting curb appeal and property value. Most people go for plantation shutters for their timeless, vintage look. They also provide the strongest light blocking and temperature control for your home.
