"This was a very involved plaster repair and remediation job, in a very old house. Grady is the only person (or company) who was willing to take on the job and drive all the way from Pennsylvania to our home in Northern Virginia. There are very few people who do this kind of work anymore (we really searched) and he is an expert in his field. We needed to work around his schedule, because he is in demand in the tri-state area, so it took awhile to schedule the work to begin... but it was worth it."

"Look no further, if you want someone passionate, punctual and professional use C & S.  Not only did they do an excellent job installing our new shower door, they were very knowledgeable about their product.  It is a husband and wife run company and they really do care about the customer.  If you're not happy they're not happy mentality.  Their price is very reasonable when compared to the quality of their work and competition.  I would use them over and over for future services, yes they are that good!"

"William from Boston Windows was exceedingly professional and up front. I called him for a quote to replace the windows in my townhouse. He was able to come to my house the next day to take measurements. He has been doing installations since he was 16 and had alot of knowledge. Prior to the visit, he had me send some photos of my windows to try to gage the price of the job better as well. Long story short, Mr. Boston tried to price match one of my quotes for me, but there ended up being a problem with the way my windows were cut in the townhouse on the outside, which would have increased the cost of the job by several hundred dollars because he has to pay staff to do it (vs. the other company, whose labor is all in-house). In other words, he couldn't match the price after all because I was already offered a discount from the other company and the job was so complicated. The other window companies would not have paid attention to the level of detail Mr. Boston had specified, but I ended up making my decision due to budget reasons. Mr. Boston even went and looked at my neighbor's windows to compare the architecture (since town houses are supposed to be built the same). Mr. William did not pressure me in a sale like some other companies and was up front about the cost and what I was going getting myself into if I went with X, Y, or Z. He told me flat out, that if the other similar company could keep everything in-house and could cut me a really good deal, I should go with them. Because of that, I really appreciate it. I would recommend giving BWD windows a chance if you are on the market for windows; he will try his best to work with the prices, being a one-man shop. If you have a really complicated job that would significantly affect the functioning of your house however, I would also recommend having his expertise on the job. I will be calling him if I ever need a repair on a window or door down the line."

"I received 4 bids on the project. This was the second lowest bid. Mr. Rorer was very confident that he could complete this job in 3 days. His team was very punctual and clean. The quality of the work is outstanding. There were absolutely no problems and Mr. Rorer is very talented. Mr. Rorer will be my first choice on all other work on this house."

"I had broken the side view mirror on my car and needed to replace the glass. I first took the car to Safelite, who ordered a 'replacement' mirror, then when it arrived, told me they couldn't install it and I would have to go to the dealer! So I went to Columbia Auto Collision instead. Ryan, who was the main contact there, was very helpful and ordered the glass within a day. However, the replacement glass he ordered didn't fit---apparently, the online suppliers parts don't always match the car specified. He said to give him a couple of days to see if he could find the right size glass, but if not he'd get it direct from the manufacturer/dealer. He called within a couple of days and had the appropriate glass. When I stopped by that evening on the way home from work, Eddie (owner) told me the job would probably take ~1hr, since the frame around the mirror had to be taken out in order for the glass to fit right. I brought it back a couple of days later. Ryan was there, and the mechanic put the glass in in about 5 minutes, which surprised me given the conversation I had w/Eddie. Mirror was fine that day, but the next morning, it fell off (held in place by the heater element, otherwise it would have broken) when I closed the door on the car. I went back to the shop, Ryan was very apologetic and had his "glass specialist" re-set the mirror with some stronger adhesive. Took a little longer (maybe 15 min), but they still didn't take apart the mirror as Eddie had suggested they would need to. Ryan told me that if it doesn't hold, he'll refund the money. At the moment, the glass seems to be holding, but I am concerned that it may not be 'framed' properly (you can see where the inner black edge frames the mirror on one side, but not the other). I think Eddie might have had his guys do a more thorough job had he been there to supervise. Overall, they were helpful and willing to work with me to get the job done. I'm just not sure about the quality."

Glass Block questions, answered by experts

New glass costs anywhere from $3 to $100 per square foot. More specifically, tempered and insulated glass—a common option for sliding glass doors—costs between $10 and $14 per square foot.

You can still see vaguely into some types of glass block windows at night. Although there won’t be clear definitions, passersby may still see shapes, shadows, and movement through the glass. If you want complete privacy, consider installing diamond glass block windows rather than the typical clear or wavy glass blocks.

Yes, professionals can install decorative or colored glass block patterns for a unique look.

Glass block windows typically last for 15 to 30 years, which is slightly less than the 20- to 50-year lifespan of standard windows. You can extend their life by resealing them every few years. Professional installation is also key to ensuring the windows are placed correctly and will function properly for years to come. A professional installer will have the necessary skills, tools, and knowledge to install these features and can identify potential issues like damaged frames or cramped areas during a consultation.

Glass block installation can be relatively expensive due to the range of material costs and the labor time to assemble this type of specialty window. The process proceeds slowly as the glass does not absorb moisture from mortar and silicone caulk takes longer to harden, leaving spacers to hold up the structure until the caulk or mortar begins to cure. Plus, if your current windows have structural issues or damage, you’ll need to repair them before beginning the project, increasing your bottom line.
