"We had a chimney fire in February and we had them come inspect the chimney damage and stove condition. They installed a new stainless chimney liner and new Jotul wood stove. We couldn’t be happier with the service and purchase. Top notch experience! We highly recommend!"

"We recently moved into this home and wanted the chimney inspected and swept prior to using it for the first time as we were uncertain if it had been done in recently.  Robert was highly recommended to me by my neighbor so I gave him a call.  I had to leave a message but my call was promptly returned and an appointment made.  I was quoted $145 which was reduced to $135 when I asked if he had a military discount.  He arrived on time and took a look up the chimney noting that it had been swept prior to our move in and said that it looked good.   He took the time to explain how chimneys are put together and how ours was in good shape.  He showed us how to open/close the damper and explained the fan system our unit has.  He then moved to the outside and went up to the roof and inspected the chimney cap and the surround.  The chimney cap was a little tilted so he righted it.  He took pictures of the exterior and included them in our final statement.   The final bill was $95 instead of the $135 quoted.  All in all, a good experience.  I will certainly call him again next year.

Chimney Inspection questions, answered by experts

Yes, your roof will leak if you have missing or damaged shingles. Severely damaged or missing shingles are essentially holes in your roof, leading to water seeping into your attic and ceilings. The underlayment underneath your roofing is a secondary form of protection, so you should fix shingle damage and replace missing ones as quickly as possible.

It’s possible to install your chimney cap in some areas, but it’s usually better to hire a professional. Before you attempt a DIY chimney cap installation, check to see if your local building department requires a permit. If it does, you should hire a professional to pull the permit and complete the work for you. Even if you don’t need a permit, getting up on your roof is dangerous, especially if you have an aggressive pitch or slippery roof material, like metal. Hiring a chimney professional guarantees the job is done correctly and keeps you safe from injury.

If you don’t see obvious signs of roof leaks, like water spots on the ceilings inside or visible damage to the roof membrane, the best way to check for leaks is to have a professional complete a heat scan of your roof. This will identify areas where water has penetrated the membrane and is keeping the roof cooler in certain areas.

Homeowners insurance may cover chimney leaks, repairs, or replacement, but coverage depends on the cause of the damage. If the chimney is damaged by a sudden, covered peril like a lightning strike, storm, hail, fallen tree, or an unexpected fire, your policy is likely to cover the costs. However, insurance generally does not cover damage resulting from normal wear and tear, old age, or a lack of proper maintenance, such as failing to perform regular cleanings and inspections. If a fire or other damage is caused by a known issue you didn't address, the claim may be denied. Additionally, some policies may have specific exclusions for events like high winds or earthquakes.

If your roof has a vapor barrier, you will need approximately one square foot of roof vent for every 300 square feet of ceiling space. If there is no vapor barrier, the roof should have one square foot of roof vent for every 150 square feet of ceiling space. If you are not comfortable making this determination, a local roofing professional can help.
