"Fox Trail Electric is a pleasure to work with. I’ve used this company for small jobs such as replacing outlets to bigger jobs of installing a new electrical box and running electric outlets outside. They consistently complete jobs in a timely manner and always clean the area when finished."

"It was difficult for me to describe what type of wire had been severed by a previous work crew -- who never bothered to tell me that they had cut a wire while they jack-hammered my back concrete deck --  so we agreed that when the electrician had another job in my area, he would stop by to assess my workscope.  He did that on Friday -- fortunately I was here because I got no call in advance  -- and he concluded that the work could be performed at that time.  The wire was reconnected and tested to see if all of the electricity-consuming featured in the gazebo worked.  Not all did, but that was the fault of the appliance, not the work performed by the electrician.  I asked that, as an extra service, he tack up another electrical line so that I wouldn't sever it when I mowed along the edge and under my deck, and he did so cheerfully.  The two-man crew was here for a bit more than an hour and accomplished what I had asked him to do in the Angie's List Big Deal, which was two man-hours of electrical work of any kind.  I have greater peace of mind now that my dogs can play in the back yard without my worrying that they will come in contact with a live wire..

"Our old Generac home generator had died and we received several estimates for a new home generator. We decided to go with SciFiHomes, Inc. based on the fact that they could install a Cummins industrial/military grade generator into residential homes. The real selling points were that we would be receiving a high grade generator that is extremely quiet compared to the competition. Tony and Marshall are Master electricians who are ultimate professionals in customer service. They were punctual in their visits (initial site estimate, install, and inspection) and thoroughly explained how the process would unfold. As Master electricians, Tony and Marshall are extremely meticulous and I've never seen a more cleanly wired electrical panel box. During the install they noticed that the top cover to the generator had a slight scratch/dent from the delivery. They said it was under warranty and would order a new top cover. I told them it was minor and that they didn't need to, but they still followed through and came out later to install the new pristine cover. These two guys are throwbacks to another era, who pride themselves in customer service. They're definitely not the traditional "in and out" contractors you normally deal with in northern Virginia. Because of this, I'm contracting them for all my annual service maintenance. You'll be pleasantly surprised by the quality workmanship of SciFi Homes, and even more importantly, the quality and quietness of a Cummins home generator!"

"WB Lightning Rods did an excellent job installing lightening rods on our home. The owner stayed onsite the entire time to supervise the work. He took extra care to plan the rod and cable placement to ensure the proper protection and retain the aesthetics of our home. His crew were knowledgeable, polite, neat and efficient. We could not be more pleased with the results."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

Yes, an electrical fire can start even if nothing is plugged into an outlet. While a correctly functioning outlet poses no risk, a fire can be caused by faulty wiring, damaged outlet components, an overloaded circuit, or other electrical problems hidden behind the walls. If you suspect a fault, immediately turn off the circuit breaker and contact a professional electrician to diagnose and repair the issue.

The main reason outlets become loose is because the contact points have started to wear down after years of use. Occasionally, poor wiring can cause heat or sparks that can damage the outlet and cause it to become loose. Either way, if your plugs slide out after being inserted into the outlet, it’s time to replace it.

You can add an electrical outlet outside by sending a wire through the wall from an existing interior outlet. Without having to open up walls, you can thread a new electrical cable from the existing outlet through the wall and to the exterior. You’ll need to cut a hole in the siding to place your new outlet. Ensure that your outdoor outlet is a GFCI outlet (ground fault circuit interrupter outlet) per the National Electrical Code. It’s best to hire an electrician to add an outdoor outlet unless you have previous electrical experience.

Wire color codes vary depending on the region. For instance, the United Kingdom has updated its wiring codes to match Europe's color system. The United States wiring color code is different, as is Australia's. Because the color code system isn’t universal, it’s essential to hire an experienced electrician to perform any electrical work to ensure it is done correctly.

An outlet can start a fire if it has blown a fuse, or is sparking, overheating, or smells burnt. Prevent electrical fires by unplugging the device connected to the outlet and hiring an electrician to determine and fix the outlet’s issue. If the outlet stays hot or isn't working, you should fix it.
