"James is the best!! This is the first major project that my husband and I have undertaken and we were pretty nervous about it â until we met James. I got estimates from several companies before I found James and each one told me I would have to have different people do the tile, drywall and fireplace work. And then James came in and told me he could do it all . . . and he did!! The entire project only took 2 weeks start to finish and the disruption to our home was minimal, even though it snowed a few times and we had quite a bit of ice. My husband and I were impressed with Jamesâ professionalism, his technical skills and his amazing people skills. On more than one occasion, I questioned whether something would work out and James patiently explained how it was going to be the best option and reassured me that it would also look great, and it always did! I also want to mention the great â back officeâ support from Michelle Chambers, who was as awesome as her wonderful husband! I will be proudly recommending James Chambers to everyone I know!"

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

In short, yes, gas fireplaces create fewer pollutants and are considered more environmentally friendly than traditional ones. In general, natural gas fireplaces release only half to two-thirds as much CO2 per unit of heat (BTU) as burning wood. Plus, gas fireplaces emit fewer harmful particles and air pollutants. They can also be about three times as efficient as wood in terms of heating your home, resulting in a much higher level of their energy converting into heat.

The easiest fireplace to build is an electric fireplace. These aren’t true fireplaces but can mimic the look of a traditional fireplace. True fireplaces, made of brick and stone, are complex and require professional installation; adding them to an existing home is demanding and expensive. You could spend $30,000 to have a real fireplace installed.

It’s possible to clean your chimney by accessing it from the opening above your fireplace, but be aware that this method is messier because you will be pulling loose buildup of soot, ash, and creosote into your fireplace instead of up, out, and onto the roof. While the bottom-up method can cause more of a mess, it’s a good option if you’re not comfortable getting on the roof.

Wood is classified as either hardwood or softwood. For firewood, hardwoods are generally the best choice as they tend to burn longer, hotter, and produce less smoke than softwoods. Recommended hardwoods include oak, hickory, maple, cherry, ash, beech, birch, elm, and walnut. Oak is a particularly good option as it's widely available, slow-burning, and doesn't produce much smoke or sparks. Some woods, like oak, hickory, and cherry, also emit a pleasant scent. It is best to avoid softwoods such as eucalyptus, poplar, and willow, as they create a lot of smoke and have a high moisture content that makes them difficult to light and burn efficiently.

Your chimney comes with dampers, which are similar to air vents. Dampers are metal plates that allow hot air and smoke to flow from the fireplace up your chimney and out of your home. When you close the damper, it prevents cool air from getting into your home. This is why you’ll want to check to make sure your damper is open before starting your fireplace and you want to ensure it’s closed after the fire goes out. You can open and close them via an external knob, pull chain, or lever.
